Is it normal for your thyroid to hurt every so often?

I am on tapazole to prepare for surgery. I've been on it for a couple weeks now. ALl of a sudden today my thyroid started to hurt. It hurts to swallow, it hurts to talk, laugh, when I touch it, it hurts!! When I move my neck it hurts.

Why would this happen when I am taking an anti thyroid med?

IS it normal??

Hi April,

about 2 months after being on PTU, I had a thyroid "flair-up" with all the symptoms you mentioned. My endo said it is normal and in some instances it's like your thyroid "fighting" the meds. It did return to normal after about a week and a couple doses of rx naxproxen (rx. strength aleve).

It totally freaked me out when this happened but thankfully it was short-lived.

If you're in too much pain & it persists too long, call your dr.

ok, thanks for the info!!

It does feel a *little* bit better this morning. I hate calling there, I don't want them to think I call too much or whatever! Last night it was exremely painful to swallow, this morning it hurts but I can deal with it.

Glad to hear its normal!
