Am I crazy or is the rest of the world?

If you've read my posts I am a mom to 5 kids and 1 husband, go to school full time and do volunteer work. Three years ago I was diagnosed with IBS, the doctor said I need to cut certain veggies, increase others, but other than that just get used to it. I have a mild case so it's not all that bad. In July this year, I finally saw the endo, was diagnosed with Hashimotos, and he told me to cut out sweets and carbs. Eat more calcium (cause I'm getting older he said) and lots of lean meat. I cut my carbs, take my meds and my multi-vitamin faithfully, exercise 3-4 times a week and get plenty of sleep (thanks to the hypo). Of course I have also gained 25 pounds in 18 months. the last week of August I had emergency surgery for a kidney stone. Apparently the kidney stone was too big to pass and I passed it anyway. So they needed to do repairs. So I went to my followup on Friday. You're gonna love this. I need to cut the dairy and the meat. completely. So, to recap, No dairy, no meat, no carbs, no sugar, and my list of good veggies is limited. My multi-vitamin contains calcium and so do all the ones in the store I looked in. Apparently the only safe thing left is water. Anyone have any suggestions for things to eat? I tried to explain this to my husband and he laughed and said I was making this up. I was in tears. And to top it all off, when I weighed myself that morning, I had gained two pounds that week. Mary

Why can't you eat meat and dairy? B/c of the stone? I would call a dietician and try to talk with one of them so they can help you figure out all of the things yuo are able to eat. Maybe you can have meat once in a while, just not every day.

Good luck!

Well I was going to suggest soy but I just remembered that it was on the list that Cathy posted the other day of things that you shoudn't eat if your thyroid is bad so I guess thats out too......Oh boy, I don't know what to tell you,I sympothize with you it seems like everytime they find something else wrong they give you another diet restriction. hang in there I hope the doctor can figure something out, the dietian sounds like a good idea thought. good luck

Hi Mary - I think the suggestion of a dietician or a registered nutritionist is a great one. Just lay out all your issues and see what they suggest. I guess the diet that is good for IBS is not good for the gall stones and vica versa (sp?)! I'm really busy this week getting back to work but when I can, I'll check out the autoimmune conditions book that I have and see if there's a clue in there for you! It's really a difficult situation for you to deal with. Do you think you can see a nutritionist? Cathy :)

I called the doctor and left a message that I wanted to see the dietician and she told me they don't send people to the dietician for this type of thing, I should just follow the guidlines that each of the doctors gave me. The dietician is for severely obese patients and diabetics. There is only one and she is overbooked. I told the nurse when she called that I would be severely obese in a couple weeks at this rate. I gained two more pounds. She thought I was joking, I wasn't. My weight keeps climbing and I get so frustrated. Maybe if I call her too much she'll give in. I don't know what to do anymore. Mary

Can you call a dietician or nutritionist on your own? Or do you need the referral? Are you still working out and watching what you eat? Well - I know you're watching what you eat but are you eating right, no junk etc? Are you eating enough?

I think you need to start fresh with a new doctor, perhaps someone who is an holistic doctor or an osteopath. You need someone to connect all these "dots", because you know it's all related, you just don't know how.

And anyway - dieticians are for anybody who wants to see a dietician for goodness sake!!!Here's a link for the nutritionist on ivillage: http://messageboards.ivillage.com/iv-fdeatinggood and here's the link for the healthy eating expert board. She's very good: http://messageboards.ivillage.com/iv-fbask

I know it's very discouraga=ing but keep at it. You really need to get to the bottom of it all so you can feel good again. Cathy

Hi Cathy, I have an HMO so I need the referral to see the dietician unless I want to pay for one. Since I quit the job to work full time on the masters, money is way too tight for me to pay for the appointment. As far as the protein, I can have fish or chicken, no dairy until the bloodwork all comes back at least, the endo says no carb, and the gastro says I cannot have broccoli, cabbage, brussels sprouts, cauliflour and those types of veggies, but I can have all the squash, tomatoes (pureed or seedless)and anything high in sugar. So for my birthday Saturday I guess I will have tomatoes and a fish cake. LOL

Sounds yummy!!! :) When I have some time, I'll look into it all for you. There wasn't anything in the book I have. I'm very pressed for time lately since I just went back to work. And I'm writing a series of parent workshops on basic parenting skills that my friend and I are going to do at the school starting in the last week of October. It's an inner city school with a lot of abuse and mistreatment issues and we're hoping the workshops will give some parents other alternatives. I've been working on it all summer and just got all my approvals the day before yesterday so it's been a mad rush to get everything done! But things should lighten up soon and I'll see what I can find for you. It just bothers me that you're in such a bind - it seems sort of ridiculous! :) When is your birthday? Cathy :)
