I told my doc I played volleyball and he freaked out saying I shouldn't play any sports, not even a brisk walk b/c it could cause heart arythmia. I can't find anything on the web about those 2 being related. I love playing volleyball, its not hard core, I actually play with a few beginners. I just dont know what to do. I told him I really don't want to give up volleyball and he was like "well, I dont want to read about you in the paper".

Any opinions?

My opinion: Your doctor is nuts! Scare tactics should not be used in medicine. What he needs to do is ask questions (about how much energy you exert, how often and for how long),explain why it is dangerous for you and let you make your decision. But that's just my opinion. Mary

Hi April - there are real concerns about raising your heart rate but I agree with Mary, too. Your doctor should be able to outline some parameters for you. I know you can't do vigorous exercise and I'm sure other people who are hyper can help here. If I can find anything for you on the topic, I'll post it here. In the meantime, I'd call back your doctor and see if he can be a bit more specific. LOL!! Cathy :)

My family doc and endo both encouraged me to exercise. I asked them about it since i walk and dance and do aerobics etc. They said as long as i didn't have probs it was a good thing. Of course i take beta blockers and tapezole, and i wouldn't do it if my heart was racing or anything, don't think i could, but otherwise i think it would be worse if you didn't ge some kind of exercise,

No, I'm sorry - I didn't mean a specific exercise but a specific heart rate - if you wore a heart rate monitor when you worked out or played volleyball, you could monitor your heart rate like other people do when they're doing a regular cardio workout. So that way, you'll know when you're at 45% of your maximum heart rate or 75 % or whatever it is that's still ok for you. Then ... you'll be able to judge from that when you're still within a good limit for you or when you're going over. I'll check it out for you! Cathy :)
