I'm feeling very nervous because I had a thyroid ultrasound last week and my doctor just referred me to an endocrinologist. Can anyone tell me what this means? And what should I expect when I go in to see them? I'm very nervous and feeling worried. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello! I can't say I know much about ultrasounds, but try not to be scared. If he referred you they might have seen something. The thyroid is easily treatable. Often people have nodules on their thyroid but they aren't cancerous.

I know it's easier said than done, but try not to worry! Did you get any blood tests done??

Good luck!

Hi Sweetchild2004,

The endocrinologist is the specialist in the thyroid area so he/she should be able to treat you with more expertise hopefully.

Hi. Thanks for your replies. I haven't spoken with my doctor yet, she only mailed me a notice stating that she referred me to the endo. and they made me an appointment. I should probably call her and ask her what they found on the ultrasound. I'm just nervous and wanted to avoid the news. She also told me in my initial appointment that she thought my thyroid was slightly enlarged and could possibly be a goiter. She made me take some blood tests as well, but when I got those results they all fell within normal range. I noticed during the ultrsound she focused on one side for about 20 minutes and the other side for only 10! So, I guess during this next appointment with the endo. she'll take more tests? What's an uptake? My appointment is in 2 weeks so during this time i'll make sure to write down all of my questions and try not to worry. Thanks again.

uptake scan is when you swallow a small amount of radiactive iodine and then 24 hours later (sometimes sooner) they scan your neck to see if the radiation was all absorbed or if one spot took up more radioactive iodine. I guess it lets them know if you have nodules, hyperactive thyroid or thyroiditis.

I had one done. It was pretty easy.
