Parathyroid?

Hi all:

Does anyone have a hyperparathyroid? I am being evaluated for it because my PTH came back elevated, as did my calcium. I think it might be related to the muscle spasams, by the way.

I have lab tests in the next few days and an endo appt. in Nov.

Thanks,

Dee.

I was just tested for it since I had another set of stones. They ran the 24 hour urine catch and found that my calcium and an acid that comes from protien were too high. The pth turned out to be within normal limits, so we will just watch it and he wants to test again in a few months. I was curious about the parathyroid since he said this could be from an inflamation of the parathyroid. Since I started on the synthroid in July, I have had a sore throat. Not really sore but just the feeling like a lump in my throat. The endo had said it was a wonder that he couldn't see me swallow and asked about any throat issues when I saw him last and I said there were none. I see him this afternoon and that is one of the first things I will tell him about. Mary

Thanks for your reply.

Let me know what you find out.

I'm still waiting for my lab slips to come in the mail, then I'll have the labs done and see the endo in Nov.

In the meantime, my throat is also sore (I thought that was my thyroid), and of course, I feel like poo (excuse the phrase).

Another question---

I looked again at my results from last time and my PTH was high, but Calcium normal. I've never had stones (one thing to be thankful for... my husband has and, OUCH!)so now I'm wondering if it really is a problem. Have you found any resources on the parath? Where did you hear that an inflamation is causing? Just curious for more details.

Dee

ps. I almost fell over laughing when I realized that a 24-hr catch meant ALL of it! I guess I'll take it to work with me???? Put it in the break-room fridge??? LOL!!

With the 24 hour catch you usually get an additive to put in the jug that keeps it from getting nasty. That way you don't have to refrigerate it. However it is a big jug and brown and you will have to carry it into the bathroom with you. I took a day off from church and did it on a Sunday. It was easier that way.

My favorite part of the 24hr. urine test was when the lab lady says to me "have you ever had a 24 hr urine test before?" and I say "no" and then she says "well do you think a gallon will be enough?" and I just stare at her and then finally say "a gallon of what?" then she picks up this big jug and I must have looked completely dumbstruck because the man standing next to me starts laughing and I finally realize that she wants me to put all my pee into this jug and I say "I don't know I've never seen it coming out before", and then say "how do you want me to get it in there?" and she says "oh just go into another clean conatiner and pour it in." Now the man next to me looks loke he is going to have an embolizim from laughing so hard......it was good thing we were in a hospital.........................will a gallon be enough? how are you supposed to answer that?

If you drink a normal amount of water per day (64-80oz of water) a gallon should be just fine. I think mine was just over 2liters so go with the gallon.
