Does anyone know if thyroid issues can affect your monthly cycle?  For as long as I can remember I have had extremely light periods that last at a maximum, only 2 days.  My gyno said it was considered normal since everyone is different but I just read something on a thyroid site saying it might be a symptom of thyroid problems or PCOS.

Thyroid does affect menstrual cycles. I've heard that heaver, longer periods is common with hypo (and is true in my case--- My cycle has also shortened from 31 days to 24 days).

Hi Christine - Hypothyroidism usually causes heavier periods, that may last longer and have more severe cramps. I'd have to check for you to see if PCOS can cause lighter periods but offhand, I don't think so. Are you asking if your light periods are a symptom of hypothyroidism or perhaps, PCOS - or have they gotten heavier and that's why you're asking. I'm confusing myself!! :) Cathy

Nothing has changed, they've just always been very light.
