I have been trying desperately for 2 months to lose 10 pounds. I exercise heavily 5 days a week. I have several symptoms of hypothryoidism and my tsh is 3.78 however I can't get my doctor to give me medicine. He doesn't recognize the suggested new range 0-3 for tsh levels. any suggestions?

Hi:

It's so frustrating... My GP doesn't recognize the new range, either. I got my OBGYN to refer me to an endochrinologist because I was concerned about getting pregnant (in my case my tsh was around 5 at the time). The endo also uses the old range, but has made the goal of levothroid therapy .3-2.

Have you looked up the symptoms of hypothyroid? If you have the symptoms, I recommend you find another doctor. There are lists of specialists by region... look at the list on about.com.

Good luck,

Dee.

Hi and welcome - It's going to sound a little harsh but ... you need to find a new doctor. Someone will take you seriously. That's about the only answer, really. I know that's unforunate but it's worth the search. I went through 3 doctors before I found mine - and two for my son!! So keep looking. Ask around - you never know who might know a good endo or even a GP that knows his or stuff. You can also check this site: http://www.aace.com/memsearch.php or this one:http://www.thyroid.org/index.php3?M_Session=9994cd41eb24e7a8b784b42c34ca745a. I hope this helps! Let us know what happens. Cathy :)
