Calcium & absorption

Hi:

I did get my recent labs back and they said that my "calcium is slightly high"... but this time the PTH was low-normal. Which is odd because 6 weeks ago it was high. Anyway, my question is, if Calcium intake interferes with absorption of synthroid, does having high blood calcium interfere also?

Hi Dee - I don't know for certain but my guess is that it doesn't. I'll check on this when I can and post for you here. Cathy :)

I don't know if high calcium in the blood can block the absorption of synthroid, but I do know that it can be an indicator of a parathyroid problem. They were checking my husband for this when he was having problems due to his hemochromatosis. And I know my mother's doctor was very concerned about her high calcium level in her blood just before she passed away. It is something you do want to follow up on. Parathyroid problems can be very serious.

Hi:

Thanks to you both for your responses! I'm very interested in how the Hashimotos and hyperparathyroid might interact... I've read they're not related, but I do wonder whether one will impact the other with symptoms, etc.

I'm still not sure if that's why the extra calcium is there, though... seems likely since the level was once high. I'll just have to wait and see what the endo. says.

Dee.
