Hi Everyone,

THis is my fist time on this board....I am usually on the Post Partum Depression board, my son was born in May and now i have been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. (Hopefuuly the cause of my PPD). Anyway...my endocronologist did not want to treat my physical symptoms of hyperthyroid (sweating, hair loss, rapid heart beat ) becuase he was more concerned with my mental state & thought the thyroid problem would fix itself. That was totally fine w/ me b/c I would much rather be mentally healthy (currenlty on zoloft). Well, now I have been having horrilbe muscle pain...biceps, quads, it's hard to sleep at night and picking up my 20 pound son is tortore!! I did some research and found this could be caused by the hyperthyroid. The dr. said that is not the case, it would be caused the meds. that are given to treat the thyroid problem...which I am not on ....so basically the muscle pain is not my thyroid. Is this a coincidense or should I get a 2nd opinion?? Thanks so much...I am really at a loss!!

I'm certainly not a health care professional in any way, but I as a patient, I can't understand why the doctor won't treat your thyroid issues because of your mental health.

Wow, thanks so much for writing me all of that informatoin. He did mention post partum thyroidis and feels that this will correct itself over time. Did you ever consider that you had PPD? The symptoms are so similar. I have already made an appt. w/ another dr. ...but that's not until 11/11!! I have been taking alieve for the pain, but it is so hard to lift anything. I am afraid to give me son a bath b/c I don't think my hands can hold on that tight!! I can't say that I had much weight loss....that's why I was a little skeptical that I was hyper but my TSH levels were non existent along w/ my LH. He said that not all hyper patients lose weight..how do you feel about that??? THanks so much for the info. greatly appreciated. Pls. let me know if you think of anything else.

I would definately get a second opinion. As far as what I remember reading muscle pain is usually associated with hypothyroid but I don't know about hyperthyroid for sure. I have never heard of having muscle pain from taking the meds for thyroid. I am no expert but have done a lot of reading of late and have never heard of that before - not to say it couldn't be true. As far as taking Zoloft and thyroid meds I have done twice with no ill effects. Personally I think it is important to treat BOTH the thyroid and the depression simultaneously (currently doing just that myself). The thyroid COULD be the reason (or part of the reason) you are depressed. I would really question WHY the doctor does not want to treat your thyroid. I don't think it is necessary for your mental state to be in good health PRIOR to treating your thyroid since your thyroid could well be playing a part in your mental state. If your thyroid does correct itself down the road you can be taken off the thyroid meds at that time. I would question the docs reasons for not treating you and find out your test results so you can do some research yourself.

A book you might want to get from your library is THYROID SOLUTION by Ridha Arem. I recently just read the book and found it to be very helpful in giving me information I need to know.

Hi Brenna - I only have a minute to respond tonight but yes, please get another doctor. How can you be reacting to medication that you aren't even taking?? And, not treating hyperthyroidism is very dangerous. Just the high heart rate alone is enough of an issue to warrant treatment. Cathy
