Cathy- you are so awesome about finding information and a few other gals on here that I thought I'd ask this question.
I've heard from a few people about adrenal fatigue. I am leaning more towards it's a bunch of hoopla. I mean, anyone who has been through it seems kinda wacky to me sometimes that I don't think I would trust them as far as I could throw them. KWIM? Doc's won't treat it, at least not a regular doc. I discussed it with my endo and he said those are the people who think they have something wrong with them b/c they are older now and can't do things like they used to. It's the aging process. They find something to say they have and try to fix it. He said to ask them if they can show me any proof of case studies that showed it was a true thing with real results. He said they probably couldn't show me anything that was independently done.
If you can find something independtly done not by an author or doc who is then selling his/her vitamins, I'd appreciate it. I can't find anything that spells out the facts.
Thanks
April

Hi April:
I have only read about it on Mary Shomon's site... she wrote the article, I think. But my old endo, who was more conservative and traditional than my new one--- he openly expressed disgust for patients getting medical information online--- tested my adrenal function saying that any adrenal problem should be addressed. He never mentioned adrenal fatigue or weak adrenal funtion, though... so I'm not exactly sure what disorder he was looking for.
It's true that I've seen it mentioned on a lot of supplement websites, but there also seem to be some holistic practitioners addressing it. I'm not inclined to toss out integrative or holisitic medicine as flakey because it's alternative. The area of caution is of course whether treatments have been rigorously tested. Mind you, how often are alopathic medicines pulled because they are found after they're made available to be unsafe or ineffective? So, in other words, I'm no less cautious or trusting with any discipline.... but since both have something to offer, I'm not ruling anything out.
But you're right, sometimes the best way to get an impression of something is to look at who is recommmending it. Whose bandwagon is it?
Something that comes to mind is that in graduate school a doctor at the student health center told me she thought I had Chronic Fatigue Syndrome... for years I laughed about it with my friends. Like, can you believe a doctor would even mention that as a reason? I felt it was a silly diagnosis and that people who believed in it were just trying to have a legitimate reason for being depressed. I have to tell you, though--- now that I have Hashimotos, I've been doing more research on autoimmune disorders and I have to say I'm starting to think she might have been right...? And in the meantime, it seems, CFS has been more widely examined and discussed.
My point is sometimes it's hard to tell if some people are cutting-edge thinkers or flakey nuts :-)
Dunno if my rantings help,
Sorry no articles,
Have a great Thanksgiving,
Take care,
Dee.
It helps a little.
Hi,
I'm not an expert in this in any way...but something the other poster said "clicked."
I remember my aunt being diagnosed with Epstein-Barr virus, then just about a year ago a friend was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. She said her doctor told her they were the same thing.
I just "googled" Epstein-Barr virus and the first article I looked at said it was some related to mononucleosis. I then googled "Epstein barr and chronic fatigue and came up with this info:
http://www.health4her.com/library/concerns/epstein_barr_virus.asp
One of the first things I noticed was it mentioned adrenal function.
Now, I have no idea what any of this means, but you may find more information looking through this route than just a general "adrenal function" search.
Sorry if I'm jumping to the wrong conclusions or butting in...but I thought it might be interesting, or may help further your search for information.
