Thyroid Test Results accurate?
| Wed, 12-01-2004 - 10:34am |
Hi Everyone, I had a bad anxiety attack a month ago and a lingering anxious feeling ever since..When it happened I lost my appetite for a good 2-3 weeks- lost 5 lbs...the past 2 weeks have been better but I still feel uptight. I went to the dr and he tested my thyroid and said everything came back perfectly- nothing wrong....
Im wondering if the fact that Im taking birth control pills could possibly make the test results show that things are "fine" when in fact theyre not?? Is that possible?

Hi, it's been my experience that birth control does not effect the results of thyroid bloodwork. I wondered that myself when I was diagnosed with thyroid problems and I asked my doc.
Of course, everyone's body is different and your body may be reacting to different things differently. You may want to call your ob/gyn and get their opinion if you are hesitant to call your regular doc.
You may also want to ask your doc what EXACTLY the numbers were for your thyroid test results. It may also be that his interpretation of "normal" is a bit out of date. Normal TSH levels can be anywhere between 1 and 3 depending on the person and how they feel. But if you don't know what your numbers are, you don't know if your doc is using the latest data.
See if you can get those numbers from him (TSH, T4, T3 and any others) and come back here and post them...there are folks here who can help you interpret them!
Good luck, I hope you start feeling better soon!

Hi - I saw your other post, too but will answer them both here. I wonder if your birth control pills are causing some of the anxiety that you're feeling? I don't even know if that's possible and would have to look up a connection for you. i can do that tomorrow.
Can you get your results, as "dazed" suggested? It sounds like you may be hyperthyroid, but perhaps only borderline at this point and that's why you're not being diagnosed. Try to see what your test results were and post back with them, ok? When i get the other info, I'll post it for you. Cathy :)
