an overactive thyroid. I gave birth to twins (#4 and #5) almost 2 years ago, had a tubal, and missed my period for the first time in my life 6 weeks ago. I was happy to learn I wasn't pregnant, but was surprised to find out my thyroid was overactive. However, I was ready to ask my doctor for anti-anxiety medication while I was there for more bloodwork, until I read the symptoms of hyperthyroidism - could this really have made me feel this bad? I been telling DH for a couple of months now that I feel like I'm about to have a nervous breakdown! And the sweating - at 37, I though menapause had arrive. The only symptoms I don't have are extreme weight loss (although I did rapidly drop about 8 pounds last month, only to be put on again - however, since I have yet to get my period, I feel swollen, bloated, and totally PMS - maybe it's water?), and I've actually had bad constipation (sorry TMI), but maybe that's due to the PMS also.
The doctor said I have a nodule, and I'm going for a scan next week. I was totally not excpecting this - what can I expect? Will something make me feel normal again?

Hi Moira - welcome to our board. All the symptoms you describe are very typical of hyperthyroidism so you are not alone there. I'm hypo myself but I'm sure that the symptoms of hyperthyroidism are very frightening in some ways - and the anxiety seems to be something that many people share.
There are many members here who are hyper and have had the thyroid scan. Here's a previous thread that has a lot of info for you. http://messageboards.ivillage.com/iv-bhhypothyroi/?msg=8166.1
Yes, you will feel normal again although it may take a little while to get there! All of us with thyroid conditions have learned that patience really helps in these situations. And knowledge!! Please feel free to ask whatever other questions you might have. I hope this thread helps. Cathy :)
