Hi everyone!
My name is Erin and I have posted here before. The reason that I am posting now is I need some advice. I have not been diagnosed with hypothyroidism, however, all of the symptoms are definitely there (always cold, very irregular periods, muscle aches, always tired and sluggish, unnecessary weight gain, very moody and irritable, occasional tenderness/soreness on my neck, the location of the thyroid gland, and this list goes on and on..infact I would fit the "symptoms list" almost to a T, having 9 out of 10 symptoms). I was tested once (a typical blood test..nothing special), and it came back as not having anything wrong....but you know how you know when there is something wrong with your body...well that's how I am. I was tested a little over a year ago. Here's my question....what other tests can I get done that would be more thorough than just a mere blood test? I am not too knowledgeable on the different types of tests or jargon of the tyroid disease and I was just seeking out some different opinions/advice on what other options I have that would possibly detect the problem easily. Thank you in advance!

Hi Erin and welcome back! :)
There are many folks here who have many of the symptoms of hypo and their doctors tell them they are "normal". Sometimes you have to keep going to different doctors until you get one who will listen to you and help you find out why you are feeling the way you are.
The typical blood test for thyroid problems is a TSH test. Many labs and doctors believe that if your TSH level is between about .3 and 5 that your thyroid is normal. However, new studies have shown that many people feel better if their TSH level is between about 1 and 3. Your doctor probably tested your TSH level and if it came back at 4 he might say that is normal and it may not be normal for you!
An endocrinologist is the specialist who treats thyroid problems (among other things) and that would be who you want to see for (hopefully) more correct and up to date info.
Other tests that will show thyroid problems are T3 Uptake, Free T4, and I think there's a test on thyroid antibodies but I'm not sure what that's called.
Here's a really good idea of what some tests (and the correct results) should be:

I hope that helps and good luck talking with your doctor...if all else fails FIND ANOTHER DOCTOR! :)

Hi Erin,
I don't know all of the termonology but I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism from a blood test last week. I then had to go and have a "scan and uptake" and then "ultrasound" of my thyroid. It was a painless process and just gives more in depth information to your doctor or endocrinologist. I am in the process of getting more information at this time on my condition. I can totally relate to your symptoms. Good luck to you!
