One month wait to see endo - too long?

Hi everyone,

I just found this forum and searched through the old posts but didn't see anything like this.

I saw my gyn last week b/c I have been having unusual spotting between periods. She ran some tests and it turns out that my TSH level is very low (my level is 0.004, and the reference range is 0.350-5.500). She did not run T4 or T3 tests. She said I should see an endocrinologist, but the one she recommended can't see me for a month (and I am told that is normal in this field in my area).

From the reading I have done, it seems that I might have hyperthyroidism (even though I do not have many of the symptoms, and actually have some of the symptoms of hypothyroidism - so who knows?).

If I do have hyperthyroidism, is waiting a month to see the specialist dangerous? Should I try to get in to see another specialist (even if he/she is not as highly regarded as the one my gyn recommended)? I just don't know a lot about thyroid conditions so I'm not sure if waiting a month is really a big deal or not.

Thanks for your help!

Hi and welcome - waiting a month shouldn't be a problem unless you have a racing heart, high blood pressure or something of that nature. But otherwise, you're lucky to get in there in a month. I had to wait 6 months to see my endo for the 1st appointment. It's not unusual to have symptoms of both hyper and hypo. They really overlap interms of some of the symptoms so don't worry about that. I hope this helps. Please feel free to ask any other questions you might have! Cathy :)

A month is actually not bad I hate to say! I know that they do like to act quickly when you are hyper and having symptoms... my daughter was originally told she was hyper and did have the racing heart and tremors and she was only 19 so they gave her first available which was a month but put her on the "bump up" list for first cancellation and she ended up getting in within a week! Turned out she had Hashimotos but when they see a person with all that - they do try to accommodate. I had to wait about 1 1/2 months for my appointment and I've heard of much longer waits.
