i had total thyroidectomy 2 and a half weeks ago. i cant talk above a whisper, i am having a very hard time breathing, walking anything even whispering makes me short of breath it is diffucult to breathe, it was a large mass the dr. took out. 7 inch scar and 15 staples which have been removed last week. the surgeon cannot figure out why i am having a hard time. i go for test tomorrow lung function and cat scan. my epiglottis doesnt work drinking is hard i aspirate.i think there was damage by the mass or during surgery like nerve injury. and if i hiccup i vomit. if anyone went thru this please let me know your experience.i truly would be grateful thank u marissa

Hi Marissa - I haven't been through any kind of thyroid surgery but I'm so sorry you're having such a hard time. Maybe someone here can help you if they've experienced the same thing. And let us know what happens when you see your doctor and have the other tests done. Hang in there!! Cathy

Hi - wow - that is scary since I am more than likely looking at a thyroidectomy within a month or so for a very large cyst. Mine is 3.6 cm (LARGE) and I have more nodules throughout my entire thyroid. I am seeing the surgeon on the 17th. Was this surgeon recommended to you? From everything I read and from what my endo told me, you need to have a thyroid surgeon do this - a surgeon who has done hundred's of them - maybe even thousands - he said with a very experienced surgeon, you should have no problems. Maybe get to another surgeon asap and get another opinion. Was your growth cancerous? Was it maybe very difficult to remove??? I have heard that your voice can be affected for alittle while, but I would think that after 2 1/2 weeks, you would be on your way to recovering quite well. MaryAnn

I had a thyroidectomy on Dec. 29th. I went thru it just fine but I can not talk above a whisper. I came home to a sick husband and daughter. I thought I was getting a cold so I went to reg. family doctor on the monday after surgery. They placed me on a decongestant pill. That has not worked. My head is no longer stuffy but whatever this is in my throat that won't go down is killing me. I too vomit like when I belch. I can't get enough air in my throat to cough this thick mucus clob in my throat up. I to get choked if I drink to fast, I can eat just fine but I feel it is all getting stuck in my throat with this clob. I then get heartburn. I went to my surgeon to get stitches out on the 5th and he said he was going to talk with and tnt doctor. He called the next day and put me on prednisone for 6 days to help reduse swelling since mine to was very large and deep. I haven't seen a change yet. My chest hurts most of the time and sleeping is so out of the question. My surgeon said that they might have bruised my vocals and if so he would send me to a specialist to go down and see what the problem is. I hope you can find what the problem is and reply to this soon with you results so I know what I might be up agianst. By the way this is my second surgery on my thyroid and the first one was nothing like this one. Both bengin both for cold nodules an multi nodular goiter.

hi angel. i just found out after several tests and doctors i went to an ent today and found out what i already knew. i have recurrent laryngeal nerve damge from the surgery, the dr. said it is permanent and there is no cure just rehab to help me adjust and ease my symptoms i will always have a hard time breathing never talk and will always have problems swallowing my vocal cords were cut. maybe you will be fine, dont get scared about what i told you. i felt that the dr wasnt taking me seriously so. i went online and got the info on recurrent laryngeal nerve injury and took it to my dr. and i told him that i too am in the medical field and this is what i have and he admitted it and sent me next door to the ent dr, whom performed the unpleasent test and confirmed it it doesnt hurt just uncomfortable a camera up your nose and down your throat.my thyroid too was very large and deep. if we r allowed to give ouer email adress i will give u mine if u want to write we can both use support. take care and keep me posted marissa
