i had total thyroidectomy 2 and a half weeks ago. i cant talk above a whisper, i am having a very hard time breathing, walking anything even whispering makes me short of breath it is diffucult to breathe, it was a large mass the dr. took out. 7 inch scar and 15 staples which have been removed last week. the surgeon cannot figure out why i am having a hard time. i go for test tomorrow lung function and cat scan. my epiglottis doesnt work drinking is hard i aspirate.i think there was damage by the mass or during surgery like nerve injury. and if i hiccup i vomit. if anyone went thru this please let me know your experience.i truly would be grateful thank u marissa

Well got back from the surgeons visit yesterday and he is sending me to a specialist on vocal cord surgery. It is a 3 hour drive form here. I a praying for a miracle so I don't have to go. He thinks the vocals are just bruised but may have been miss placed when anesthesialogist placed the tube in before surgery. I came home so depressed last night that I ate myself silly. Not good cause I had heartburn the rest of the night and kept vomiting everytime I belched. I know gross!! How are you feeling? I go to this specialist on Feb. 1st so I'll let ya no if they are going to help me.

hi angel. ihope they can help you. they cant help me they are trying but said it is doubtful but i am not ready to give up yet. let me know what the doctors say about vocal surgery, they told me that it was a possibility to fix the right nerve but not the left, but they wont do it for a year. if you eat bland foods you wont vomit as much and keep the meals small. that gives me some relief. the breathing and talking is still very diffucult, if i stay quiet and dont do much activity i do ok. just keep me posted ,

Well I went to this specialist in Winston at Baptist hospital and he which is now a she (Don't ask)James/Jamie very gross. Anyways did an electronmyography which hurt like crazy then as she was speaking on the recorder she said that is was non recoverable. I could tell the right side was working GREAT and then the left was like slim to none. So I asked was it the surgeon or intubation and she of coarse stood up for the surgeon and that it would take alot of intensive work to find out which one it was. Anyways going back on 21 and 22 to put a ph probe in to measure acid in my throat (24 hour thing) and 2 hour vocal analysis. Then he will tell me what if anything can be done to correct this problem. I am so tired already of this whispering and heartburn and belching that I could scream. How are you doing? Has anyone mentioned to you about malpractice? It seems like everyone I say this to says oh there is a law suit. I think only if they say I will be like this the rest of my life. I am so confused about this whole mess. The more I read the more upset I get. My surgeon has called twice wondering how I am doing and that I am going to the best specialist around and that he is very concerned about me ect. Well I go to Endo tomorrow and will find out if I am on right meds. I am on lowest dosage of synthroid. Well take care and if you find anymore about this nerve damage stuff let me know. Thanks

I don't recall signing anything. Even in the hospital before surgery I never signed anything unless they did it when I was half out and I can't remember. I do recall in the office of the surgeon he said to me " you do no of the risk of getting close to the vocals." That was it and I said yes since I had been through this 16 years ago. He said it never happens usually. I had my thyroid meds upped so hopefully I will be feeling better soon. I have a lawyer looking into this but haven't heard anything yet. Robin
