Hi all I just found this message board. I am a 25 year old mother of 3 girls ages 7, 3, and 1. I had my initial blood test done on Dec. 10th. I was at the OB for my regular checkup. My thyroid felt swollen to her so she done a TSH and T4 My levels were...TSH <0.01 and T4 3.98 She wanted me to get it taken care of immediately so I went to a family practice Dr. He put me on PTU on Dec. 16th. I was SUPPOSED to have a radioactive iodine scan today BUT.. it isnt accurate if you have been taking meds. so I called my ob back because I was so mad at the family practice doc. My ob is referring me to an endocrinologist I find out tommorrow where I go from here. I am so new at this and so lost. The only thing I have been told is to quit my meds and it will be 4 weeks before i can have the RAI scan done. Any advice or input would be greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome! I was also diagnosed at 25, though i think i was hyper much longer. Are you having symptoms? Did they put you on a beta blocker or anything?? Beta Blockers can help keep your heart from racing and your bp from getting high and also helps with anxiety if you're having those probs. I was on those (and still take a small dose)before i went on tapezole, which is like ptu, but you don't have to take it as often but it's not safe if you're pregnant or breastfeeding. I never had a scan, just blood tests, and i chose not to have the rai because it's permanent, and it seemed to me that i would just be trading one disease for another. Most people end up hypo, and have to take thyroid hormone for the rest of their lives,so i figured by taking the tapezole i have a chance still of going into remission and being normal.Sometimes, you can go into remission anyway, they really don't know why. I know a woman that this happened to, so you can always hope. But in the meantime, do get treated at least with meds, if not rai, it is your choice. If you go to about.com, there is some good info on thyroid disease and treatment, maybe someone here has the link? I read up as much as possible when i was diagnosed. You really have to educate yourself, the dr's don't always tell you or know what is best for you, as i'm sure some folks here can tell you.

I hope i've been somewhat helpful, and hope you get better soon!

Hi!

I am hypo...but was put on a beta blocker because my heart was racing. (Though my BP is normal). I was wondering what you are on, and what dose? My Dr. put me on Toprol XL 25mg/day. He informed me that it is a very low dose.

Also, do you know of any side effects from beta blockers? Both long & short term? One thing I noticed, initially, is that it seems to help me sleep!

Thank you for any info you may have! : )

Hi Mom2my3girls,

Welcome to our board and I'm glad you found the chat last night.

I'm curious, does your OB think your pregnancy may have triggered the thyroid problem?

Hi thanks for the info. the only symptoms I was having was nervousiness, bp slightly elevated not bad and racing heartbeat (never under 105). I called the doc Friday to tell them that they needed to call me in something. I was off of PTU for 3 days and already had symptoms returning. They put me on atarax Not sure exactly what it is It has helped with the nervousness but not the rapid heart rate.

Hi Mom2my3girls,

Welcome to our board and I'm glad you found the chat last night.

I'm curious, does your OB think your pregnancy may have triggered the thyroid problem? That can happen and as has been stated, it might go into remission on its own. It will be interesting to see what the endocrinologist says.

What did you find out today?

Calley7

Thanks for the warm welcome. Didn't really find out much yet. I got back for the radioactive iodine scan Feb. 2nd. Have an app. with an endocrinologist on March 7th. So i guess as bad as I hate to I will go back to family physician sometime in Feb. to get results on test not sure yet. I was debating seeing if I can have the results sent to endo. even though he isnt the one that ordered the test and then just get with him on what to do if anything before March 7th. Not sure how to go about all of this I have always been pretty much healthy.
