Thyroid meds

Hey guys. As most know I just had surgery on monday the 3rd. They started me on thyroid meds the next day. Generic synthroid- the little yellow pill. It's only 100mcg. Levothyroxine (sp?!) I was wondering if they usually increase your dose slowly. ha ha look at me not even a week later and I wondering about increasing my dose. :-)
It just seems like a small dose for somone with no thyroid. At the same time I was thinking maybe the increase it slowly to be safe.
I feel ok. Hair still falling out and very sleepy. But sleepiness could be from surgery! Who knows. I see my Endo the end of Jan or beginning of Feb, I can't remember.
Thanks for any info.
April

Oh don't be concerned!
Hi April,
I noticed you are on the generic version of the thyroid hormone.
You know I've heard that too.
Hi April - You will want to change from the generic thyroid meds to a name brand like Synthroid or Levoxyl, because the generic ones can change from prescription to prescription and that's not good for you. It means that you may be getting a different dose from pill to pill, and that's not food. You want to keep the level steady. So perhaps you can talk to the doctor at the end of the month and get a new prescription. Type "generic" into the search box up above and you'll find the articles that we've posted on it.
100 mcg doesn't sound low to me. I started on 25 mcg and worked my way up to 137 mcg on Mondays to Thursdays, and 125 mcg Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The thinking is that they start you on the lowest possible dose and work their way up. So I guess that's the way it is even when you don't have a thyroid. You don't want to be taking more than you need - I guess even without a thyroid, too much medication can put you back into hyperthyroidism. So finding the balance is always important. I hope this helps! How is your recovery going? Cathy :)
Thanks Cathy.
