Question re: Hypothyroidism & Pregnancy

Hi All,
I have been having some early symptoms of pregnancy (nauseau, sore breasts, light cramping, etc.). My period isn't due until Jan. 16, so won't know for sure until then. But about a year or so ago my OBGYN diagnosed me as having hypothyroidism, but because the medicine made me nauseous and dizzy, I haven't been taking it. My question is if I am pregnant, how will this affect my pregnancy and the baby? I've read that it can cause miscarriage and low IQ. Is it too late to get on medication? Thanks for any info you can provide.

Hi Melissa and welcome - no it isn't too late to get on the medication and i think that's what your doctor will recommend as soon as possible. You need to be on the medication to avoid any complications and ensure a healthy preganany and baby!!! I've never heard of anyone experiencing those side effects from Synthroid or any thyroid medication so I wonder if that's what you were reacting to. Perhaps your dose was too high? And I would think that your doctor would have checked that out completely before just taking you off of it. But ... that's all done now!! So, yes, check back with your doctor to get a new blood test; make sure you mention the way you felt in the past. Let us know how you're doing!! And congrats! Cathy :)
