Hello, I've just been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, and i just had a few questions regarding it (im not going to the doctor until this friday). How common is it to have an excessive amount of iodine in your water to cause something like this- i heard that its rare , but my mom is having the same symptoms as me, and my 16 yr old brother also just tested pos. for having hyperthyroidism- which is really rare for guys apparently. we have well water and our water is really hard so we dont drink it straight we only use it for cooking and showers and stuff. and one other question- i was on birth control and went off of them about a month before i got tested for the thyroid condition could that have screwed up the results? thanks!

i just thought of one more thing-- i have a really sore throat, and often feel like i have a lump in my throat when i swallow- my neck feels a little swollen on the outside could this have anything to do w/ hyperthyroidism?

Hi Roxie080804,

In answer to the questions in your last paragraph, the swelling and "lump" feeling might suggest a thyroid problem.

I thnk I've read somewhere water can cause that. But I think it was more in 3rd world countries or in the midwest of the US.

I don't know about the lump in your throat, but I can tell you it's not at all unusual for thyroid problems to run in families. It's probably genetic, not your well water at all. I have Graves' disease, and my sister had her thyroid removed for the same reason many years ago. Every doctor I've seen since I was diagnosed mentioned the family history factor.
