His endo wanted to check the swelling in his thryoid. (My son is 15, for anyone who doesn't know me.) My son is fine but we learned something interesting from the doctor doing the ultrasound.
I always knew that Hashimoto's destroys the thyroid but ... I thought thyroid medication could keep that from happening and I thought that the thyroid gland was still there, just not functioning. Well, no!! LOL! It could take a lifetime to happen but thyroid meds have no effect on protecting the thyroid from the autoimmune response and slowly, over time, the thyroid just disappears. It gets reabsorbed back into the body! How weird is that? I hope I'm not upsetting anyone by posting this. I was just really shocked by it. I know I shouldn't have been, with all I've read. But I guess I just never had it described so plainly before.
We got to see the photos of his thyroid. And they showed very bright spots which were concentrations of the inflammation. The actual places where antibodies were concentrated. The doctor said there isn't anything that can be done to stop that. Serious anti-inflammatory drugs can ve very dangerous, and even life threatening, as he explained it. So there's nothing to be done about it. It was interesting to see the photos. Without his explanations, we wouldn't have had any idea what we were looking at! LOL!
I just wanted to share the experience with you guys. Cathy :)
