Fine Needle Aspiration

I have to have a fine needle aspiration tommorrow and I am almost terrified. I would like to know from someone that has had this done exactly how painful is this going to be. I have read a lot of info on the web about the procedure including that it is not extremely painful. However, my doctor told me that it will hurt. Also, he prescribed a valium for me to take prior to the appt, and told me that he will first numb the area. I am trying to figure out why I would be taking valium if this is not going to hurt. I have had nightmares for two days about doing this, and it is really starting to scare me. Its funny that I can't even worry about the outcome of the test, only how bad the test is going to hurt. Can you guys share your personal experiences so I will at least have some realistic expectations about how much pain to expect? Maybe it is just the thought of needles (which I do not like) going into my neck.

Hi. Sorry to hear that your having such a hard time with this. I have had several (at least 10) fine needle aspirations done and not one of them hurt. My doctor just gave me a small shot (felt like a little pinch) to numb the area and I didn't feel a thing after that. May I ask why your having the procedure done? I'm struggling with benign cysts on my thyroid. I'm very familiar with this procedure. I think you could even skip the med's before hand. Just my opinion. Have a good day.

Thanks for the reply; I feel a little better now. I'm not sure why the doctor told me it was going to hurt. I have a nodule on my thyroid. After an ultrasound and a thyroid uptake scan, he decided that we should do this to be on the safe side. The uptake scan indicated a cold nodule so I guess he wants to check it out.
