Does anyone else have a problem with their fingernails splitting all the time? I can't even remember the last time I had more than an eighth of an inch of nail!!! And even that's a lot these days. I'm discovering that it's not necessarily that they don't grow but that they split and break. Has anyone solved this??? Cathy :)

Hello. I hope we are all having a good day. I don't know if it's the same, but I used to be an avid fake fingernail person. I can't get them anymore because a few days later they just come off. I summed it up to the whole thyroid issues. All I put on my nails now are a clear coat. Not sure if that helped, but that's what's happeneing to me. Smile!

Hi,

I, too, have had splitting nails...I've always had the issue in the winter, but it has become worse since right before my diagnosis.
My D.O. did say it is more than likely related to being Hypo...and I know I've read it somewhere, as well.
What I have done in the past is apply lotion more often, and really concentrate on the nails/fingertips. Also, painting them helps. : )

I have never had a problem growing my nails. Everyone always thought I had the fake ones, that's how good they always looked. I noticed last fall that my nails were terrible! They kept breaking and spliting and were very weak. Then I was diagnosed with Grave's disease and both my primary care physican and my endo asked if I was having trouble with my nails. I said yes and was under the impression that weak, splitting nails is part of the thyroid issues. I have been taking a calcium suppliment when I can remember to and that seems to help!

Hi everybody - sorry I posted this and haven't gotten back in two days!! First my husband came home from a business trip, then it was my son's birthday. Today, I took the day off!! YAY for me.

I'm glad to hear it isn't just me with the nail problem but I'm sorry we're all going through it! I'm going to the endo today so I'm going ot ask him if there's anything that can be done to help it. Between that and the cracked cuticles, I can't take it anymore!! I'll let you know if I find our anything. Cathy :)
