I have just gone to my Endo doc and well he changed my meds he put me on Levoxyl .50 mgs and Cytomel .5 mgs well the pharmacey messed up and gave me 1 mg of my Levoxyl and .5 of my Cytome, and I was taking that higher dosage for 6 weeks. well my Endo doc found out and has told me to break them in half, so I have been doing that for 2 days now. Well I am now so depressed and having suicidal thoughts.
what I was wondering was can too much levoxyl cause this type of depression?
I mean I am normally depressed but have been doing well with the depression until about 2 weeks ago.
any info would be of great help to me

Hi:

I'm sure you'll get some more expert feedback on the medications issue, but I just wanted to let you know that depression goes along with the hypothyroid (and it is often worse with menstural cycles), and sometimes getting on the thyroid supplement causes a temporary worsening of these symptoms... Your underlying depression will still need it's own treatment, but the part of it that is made more severe by hypothyroidism will undoubtedly go away when you're on the right dose of your medication.

Most of all, and I should have said this FIRST, I urge you to tell your doctor about the suicidal thoughts. I've been there, too, and it is really important not to presume that you can handle it on your own. So, really, as soon as you can, go ahead and call your doctor (or another trusted provider... maybe there's someone-- a GP or therapist-- you've worked with on the depression before?) and explain what's going on.

Actually, this past week I've been having uncontrollable crying and terrible anxiety attacks, myself, so I know how much the thyroid imbalance impacts any depression/anxiety... (I'm hypo and taking the same medications as you).

Good luck & take care,
Dee.

Hi Mary - You need to call your doctor immediately and let him know how you're feeling. Whether it's the increased meds or not, your feelings are serious and he needs to know about it. Please post back and let us know that you've spoken to him and how you're doing? Some people with hypo and depression do very well taking antidepressants and you might need to do that. In any case, please post back! Cathy :)

I have been on antidepressants for some time now and they just dont seem to be working any longer. I plan on calling my Doc up and talking with him today, hopefully he can give me something to help.

Sometimes it's a matter of making sure your thyroid is at the right level, too. Make sure your TSH is between 1.0 and 2.0. It might be critical for you where for some other people, it might not make as much of a difference. Plus there are all kinds of new antidepressants out there. I'm not meaning to be glib about it all. I know it's serious medication with lots of serious side effects. But I really feel for you and hope that you can find something that helps you feel better. Let us know!

You know the other thing that I overlooked yesterday ... you really can't break these pills in half and be assured that you're getting the correct dose. Can you ask your doc to give you a new prescription for the new dose. He should really know that!! Or bring them back to the pharmacy and ask them to fill it the way they should have to begin with. You have no assurance how much medication you're receiving with each half that you're taking. That alone is a problem. Cathy :)

Thank you so much for all the input you all have given me. the medication that they gave me had yellow die in it and the doc knows that and so does the pharmacy but yet they gave me the wrong dosage. So I took my medication up there tonight and told them that they gave me the wrong dosage, and that it has caused some serious side effects on me, so they said sorry and gave me my co-payment back for 3 months, like that is really going to help me with all the depression I have. I should be getting a call back from my endo to tell me my results of my TSH levels which I know they will be high but just how high is the question.

As far as the anitdepressants go I am taking Lexapro and have been for about 3 years now.
