Anyone hypothyroid TTC? Need facts, New

Hi all.  35 and just diagnosed yesteday with hypothyroid.  My TSH was at 6.7 and my MD prescribed 25 mcg daily of Synthroid.  I have been trying to conceive the past 5 months and experienced 2 early m/c.  We took a month off of trying and are starting some preliminary fertility testing...which is how the hypothyroid was found.  The diagnosis may explain the early m/c but I'm curious as to how long it takes the medicine to start regulating your thyroid.  Do I have to wait to try and conceive until my levels are better? My OBGYN tells me to talk to my MD and my MD tell me to talk to my OBGYN.  I'm so stressed out about this diagnosis...I really don't have any symptoms and my cycles are very regular.  I guess the energy level seems a bit low but I attributed this to stress from Trying to conceive. I have an appointment with an RE in mid Feb for fertility followup, but was hoping to have more answers prior to that.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated

Member question: Dr. Amos, does my thyroid have an effect on my BBT?

Grunebaum: A low thyroid (hypothyroid) can prevent you from ovulating. A thyroid function test is usually among the first steps when evaluating infertility. Normalizing the thyroid function usually improves your chances of getting pregnant.

Greatings. I am new to this fertility site. But I'm not new to being a mom or having Hypothyriodism. First off relax! It is not something to worry about. It is something that needs fixed so you feel well and are well. I found out shorty after I had my first Son, 14 years ago. I started taking Levithroid, 125 dose. I have been on it since. I have had two additional pregnancies both with no problem related to Hypothroidism. It is true the thyroid controls just about everything directly or indirectly. I would make sure I see an endocronologist for the thyroid and let that person know you are trying to conceive. It is not always a problem for your levels to be off a bit. The thyroid is a trick fella. It is a delicate dance between several things, not just your TSH levels. There are 4 or 5 different antibodies that should be tested. Most non endocronologist, OB docs usually only test the basics. You did not mention what they tested. I would ask did you check for T3, FT3, T7, FT4, TRH or Thyroglobulin levels. They have new names for some of this stuff. There is also a range for the values. It also depends on the testing method as to the accurcy of the range. They changed the recommended ranges in 2002 make sure the Doc and Lab is using the correct range. Unless they are endocronologist I would hesitate to change your dose just like that. I am not a doctor so I would ask if the thyroid is the only thing that puts your ovlation off. With all that said.. I guess my point is first things first. Thyroid then baby works... and if you are like me and the clock is really loudly ticking it is hard to be patient. So relax..

Oh and a side note.. my book here says that BBT is effected by thyroid hormones. I am new to this BBT for fertility predictions thing but if the two are related then maybe an adjustment for that could also be a valid option.

Good luck!
