High TSH Level

Hello,

I usually post on the fibro and the SSD/Workerscomp board. I thought I have posted here before but I am scatter brained from the fibro. Anyway, I was diganosed with Hyperthyroidism in 1989 and ever since my TSH level has always been out of whack.

I had the radioactive iodine, I tried PTU and I had a sub-total thyroidectomy in 1991. I take Levothyroxine (the generic for Synthroid). I had my TSH level drawn last Monday and I got the results back last Thursday. My level was high at 76.881, normal is between 0.35-5.50. In case anyone was wondering I have taken the brand name medication (Synthroid) and that hasn't helped either. I was wondering if there is anyone else out there whose TSH is or was hard to control and what did your doctors do to help solve the problem.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Hi hurting, welcome!

Wow! They certainly made sure your thyroid was DEAD.

Hi Carla,

Is your TSH usually quite high?

April,

They did the RAI in 1989 and the Surgery in 1991 after the RAI and PTU failed. Right now I am on 100mg of Synthroid that was increased from 75mg. Yes, I always take it on an empty stomach but I do take it with other medications and yes I do take it everyday. Maybe I should try taking the synthroid by itself and see how that goes.

My PCP is trying to control my levels and have only been going to him for about two years but he has never checked my T3/T4. With my fibromyalgia I am very forgetful and I keep meaning to ask him to check that as well. I do have an Endocrinologist but for some reason he seems to think he doesn't need to follow me for my thyroid condition. I will have to talk to him about that when I see him in March if I can remember.

Thank you for your reply and concern,

Carla

Calley7,

Actually my TSH is sometimes high and sometimes low, there is no consistancy. The RAI was not effective at all, netiher was the medication PTU so they decided on the surgery. I don't really know what my problem is but I am really concerned since my TSH was really high. I have an appointment with the Endocrinologist in March so maybe he can give me some ideas.

I just responded to April's reply and I told her for some reason my Endocrinologist seems to think he doesn't need to follow me for my thyroid condition. Hopefully when he see's this extremely high TSH level he will change his mind. If he doesn't, I'll just have to change it for him. LOL

Thank you for your reply and concern.
