Hello out there. I haven't posted on this board in a long time, but I happened to be browsing around on Ivillage and decided to pop in. I found out recently that I not only have Hashimoto's disease but I also have PCOS. (Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome).
I'm wondering if anyone else is dealing with these same issues and what kind of treatments have you found to be successful. I am not hypothyroid and it doesn't look like I am going in that direction yet, but I definately still have my swollen thyroid, which sometimes swells and gets a little uncomfortable.
I haven't seen my endocrinologist since last year. I used to have an HMO and when my doctor told me to come back in 6 mo's I couldn't get a new referral. I have an appt. with my OB/GYN on Thursday, so maybe he can refer me to a good RE. (Reproductive Endocrinologist)
My last TSH was 1.2 ( I think), so over the course of 2 years it's went from 0.51, to 0.85, to 1.0 ish. But I am definately Hashi's w/ multi-nodular goiter. I had a high # of antithyroid antibodies, and both my Endo & PCP said there's not much I can do--I kind of don't think that's true. I'm a firm believer in organic foods(which I'm eating much more of now) and vitamins/herbs and even the possibility of starting a thyroid hormone, research is showing it can help Hashi's progress to slow.
Does anyone have any links to better information, or has the same thing going on? I'm curious to know what sort of therapy/med. combos seem to work.
thanks so much, Lis.

HI girlie, welcome back!
Hello CL-Jonaprilpow,
How convenient that all these great endocrine disorders can come together, eh? My doctor did stat me on Met. but, I haven't tolerated it all that well. When they initially increased my dosage I was fine until about 3 weeks later then I started to get nausea and diarrhea. I took a couple days off of my meds to relax, then the same thing about 3 weeks later. It was interferring too much with my work schedule to be sick like that. (Basically being home bound for 2 days at a time...)
I have an appointment on Thursday so I'll see what the doctor wants me to do. Maybe we can up the dosage in smaller increments so I'll tolerate it better. From what I've researched it's common that you don't get used to the medication until about 6 months. Also there are 2 forms. Metformin and Metformin XR--Extended Release, and some people have said that they don't have as many side effects with the ER version.
I am about 25-30 lbs overweight. My family and husband definately don't think so, but I want to loose about 25 lbs. I've already set it in my mind that the week of the 20th (my student's are on winter break so it will be easier) to start exercising (hopefully before work), and really stop eating sugar & most processed "junk" food.
I decided not to take BCP's right now. To me, that is not treating the source, that's treating a lot of symptoms. And the last time I went on birth control it was bad. Heavy & painful periods, emotions going all over the place--not good.
Thank you for the link. I'm going to look that info over.
Hi Lis,
I don't have PCOS or Hashi's but just wanted to pop in and welcome you back, too.
