Concern for mother

My mother was diagnosed hyperthyroid about 8 months ago by her family doctor. I don't know any of her lab numbers but he has steadily increased her PTU dose over those 8 months and she has not responded as well as he wanted her to.

He referred her to an endo and her first appointment was today. She called to tell me that he has ordered a CT scan (?) and that she has 3 options, two of which, in HIS opinion, are not options: thyroidectomy, continued drug therapy, and RAI, his treatment of choice.

I'm concerned that she will not tolerate the RAI and will end up struggling with regulating meds once she goes hypo.

By the way, she's almost 75 years old and has fibromyalgia and cardiovascular problems.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Sue
