Hi. Ive become really concerned about my thyroid lately. I have a hypothyroid, and its been getting worse. I've gone from taking .50mcg of levothyroxine to .100mcg and now to .125mcg over a period of time. Is this considered to be a very high dosage of medication for the thyroid?? Im extremely worried about this because im afraid of the whole thyroid cancer deal. Does anyone know how high my risks are for developing that? Whats weird to me is that I havent had any symptoms that im aware of to indicate my thyroid was or is changing. If anyone has any advice for me about any of this it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time

Heather

Hi Heather,

I'm not on that med so I'm not sure what would be considered a high dose.

I think you are having concerns that are worrying you that are needless. I have never heard (that doesn't mean it has never happened) of anybody getting cancer from taking thyroid meds. If your figures are going to the hypo side, the dr. is doing good to put you on meds so that your body will work more efficiently. If you get too hypo you would have been noticing quite a few symptoms that would have made you aware of something being wrong. If you are concerned and don't quite understand the reasoning behind the dr. putting you on thymed's, then write down your questions as you think of them and make it a point to ask and get some answers from him. I honestly don't think you have anything to be frightened about unless he has found some other symptoms that he hasn't mentioned to you. Ask him if he found any nodules or lumps in your thyroid area? I have had my thyroid removed due to cancer years ago, and have been on thymeds since then and have to keep my TSH very low, and it acts as a suppression therapy so that if a cell is in there it will keep it suppressed and slow growing until next dr. visit. If you are going to a PC and want a 2nd opinion you could always try to get a visit with an endocrinologist.

But, but assured, if I read your concerns right, I have never heard of thyroid med causing cancer. Bea
