Going through awful side effect of PTU

I've been on PTU for two years now for Graves Disease. My thyroid levels are finally normal but I told the doctor that my immune system is still haywire. I take forever getting over illnesses, I get frequent infections, sores in my mouth. So she did a CBC and discovered that my white blood cells were wiped out. This may be caused by the PTU (but other tests are being done to outrule other problems). I guess this is a rare side effect but just to warn anyone out there who is on PTU to demand your blood count checked now and then. So now I have to take a week off of work and stay secluded from people so I don't catch anything. The slightest infection could have serious results. The hematologist couldn't believe that I had been on the medication for 2 years and my CBC's have never been checked.
So now I'm off the meds and just have to hope that my blood count builds back up. And now I get to look forward to becoming hyper again! When that happens I have to do the RAI. I feel like this is all just a vicious circle.
So please make sure your doctor is checking your blood count, especially if your body has a hard time fighting stuff off.

My endocrinologist orders a white blood cell count and liver function test every time he orders the bloodwork for my thyroid levels. I thought they all did. Impaired liver function is another rare but nasty side effect.
