Hyper/PTU & joint pain

Hi, haven't posted in a long time. I was diagnosed w/ hyper almost 2 years ago and have been taking PTU (currently 300mg per day). I get my labs every 2 months and my endo says my levels look perfect. Anyway, about 6 months ago I started having severe joint pain where the pain will "jump" to different joints. Sometimes the pain is so severe in a joint that I can't move for a full day or 2. My endo doesn't believe this is related to PTU or thyroid (although I read it could be related). Anyway, my endo ran arthritis labs on me and I should get the results by the end of next week.

Does anyone know of any relation of joint pain and thyroid or a side effect of PTU? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Gina

Hi Gina,

From what I've read, joint pain can be associated with thyroid disorders.

Calley,

thank you for your response. My endo doesn't think it's the meds....but hopefully I'll find out soon.

thanks again,

Has your doctor issued a CBC test? If he hasn't ask him to. I was on PTU for 2 years and my blood count was never checked. Just recently, after talking to the dr. about my concerns of "unusual" things happening (cankor sores, achy muscles, infections) she finally did a complete work up and and discovered my white blood count was almost nonexistant. This IS a rare side effect of the PTU. Now I'm going through a roller coaster ride to get back to normal.

Hi Rae,

my dr. has not done a recent CBC. I've been on the PTU almost 2 years. I will be sure to ask for the CBC. I was aware of that rare side effect....just hoping it's rare enough that I won't get it!! Hoping to get my test results back in a day or 2.

Have you stopped the PTU and are you taking/doing something different?

Thanks for your input.

Were you diagnosed with Grave's disease with your hyperthyroid? Since it is an autoimmune disease your pain sounds like maybe Fibromaialga (sp?)
Anyway just a thought since both are autoimmune related.
