What are normal levels?

Hi everyone,
DD 10 was diagnosed last July with hypothyroidism. She faithfully takes her little white pill every evening along with her epilepsy meds. She was having major problems with constipation so we had her thyroid level checked. The receptionist called today and said her TSH is Free and the RIA is 3.15. What the heck does this mean? DD is going to the doctor next Friday b/c she needs meds refills but i would like to know now if this is good or does she need her meds adjusted.
TIA,
Kelly

Hi Kelly,
Welcome to our board and that's a good question.
Saying that the TSH is FREE doesn't make any sense to me and I don't know what RIA is.
In november 2004 Kelsey had bi-lateral reimplantation of her ureters due to chronic kidney infections. She was not allowed to have any sort of physical activity for two months so i thought the lack of exercise was probably the culprit. Other then the weight gain and being cold she really didn't display any other symptoms. She has been moodier then most kids as a result of the epilepsy meds so i didn't even think about that. Did i mention that as of Monday she will be no longer be taking those meds? Her energy level is better and she is not having the drastic mood swings:)
She has had kind of a rough go. She has been taking meds daily since she was three and we found out she had kidney reflux, at four and a half she was diagnosed with epilepsy ( we are hoping she has outgrown it but i remain skeptical since my sister and I didn't outgrow it until we were in our early 20's) and then at 9 hypothyroidism. Once she had surgery she was able to come off the meds for kidney reflux and now we are hoping she'll stay off the epilepsy meds. I am assuming she'll be on the thyroid meds for life but that is not a big deal. It's kind of funny my Dad was diagnosed with hypothyroidism three weeks after DD!
I will check out the links you sent. Thank you kindly.
Kely
