Are blood tests always right?

Hi everyone,

I'm having a problem--I was diagnosed with a goiter about 2 1/2 years ago. I had a needle biopsy and my endocrinologist it was OK and he just wanted to wait and watch it. I had an ultrasound again two months ago and the goiter has grown, although not by much. The problem is that he still does not want to put my on any meds because he said my blood tests are within normal limits. My mom was diagnosed with hypothyroidism when she was 35 (I'm 34) and has been on synthroid since them. I went to get a second opinion and that endo doc said the same thing the first one did--that because my blood tests are within normal limits they do not want to do anything about it. I'm having severe weight gain (almost 25 pounds in the last 15 months), I'm always miserably cold and consistently tired. My hair is falling out and I zone out quite often--my mental sharpness seems to be slipping. I have really tried to lose the weight but it's simply not working. I used to be able to lose weight fairly easily but now no matter what I do (and I got married only 2 months ago so I was very diligent about trying to lose it before the wedding) I cannot lose it and that in turn depresses me and I give up trying after a few weeks. I don't know what to do at this point and the weight issue is effecting every part of my life--my self-esteem is very low. I'm not looking for a quick fix but I also can't seem to "fix" it any other way. I've been looking on the internet and found some "herbal drugs" like Alvidar. They're expensive but if they work have no problem trying them. Has anyone heard anything positive about these kinds of drugs? I do have an appt with my ob/gyn this week--of all people, he's the one who originally felt they lump on my thyroid. I'm going to speak with him to see if he has any suggestions as I am also trying to get pregnant. I'm just looking for some guidance--I'm sick of the endocrinologists telling me they just want to "wait and watch" when they are not the ones suffering with the problems. I just feel that blood tests are not always the only things to look at when deciding on a course of action and don't know what to do at this point.

Hi Scornedd,

Welcome to our board.

I would agree with your last statement about looking at other things besides the test figures.
