Hi, everyone! I'm Amanda, 25 yrs old, diagnosed with hypothyroidism about 3 weeks ago. I started on Synthroid 2 1/2 weeks ago. Everything seems to be going fine but until I get back to the dr (in 2 more months), I thought I'd ask you all a few questions.

What, if any, side effects did you notice after starting treatment for hypothyroid? Have any of you TTC or had children while on meds? Did you have/were you warned of trouble TTC? I've been married only a couple of months...DH and I are talking about starting to TTC around the end of next year. I know it's a while away, but if there's a likelihood that we might have more-than-average difficulty then I'd like to know. Also, how long did it take to regulate your TSH levels?

I know that I'll mention all of this to my Dr. the next time I see him but real-world experiences help too. I'm sure to have more questions - I'm so glad this board is here!

Hi Amanda,

Welcome!

I'm not on synthroid so I can't address your question about side effects from personal experience.

Hi Amanda, I am new to this board and I thought that I'd answer some of your questions. I was originally on synthroid, but I have been on Levoxyl for almost 5 years now. I was not aware of any side effects when I took it. It took me about 9 months for my thyroid levels to even out. It still changes everyonce in a while. Well lets say I have had my first year with no changes!! Yeah!! I had no problem getting pregnant. We weren't even trying when we got pregnant. The only thing was that after I got pregnant my levels did change. I wouldn't worry so much about getting pregnant. As long as you are seeing your doctor and taking your medication you should be fine by the time that you guys want to start trying. As long as your levels are fine you should not have any problems at all. Congratulations on your marriage! Remember to take your medication, I know that when I don't I have a tendency to get depressed. GL!

Hi Amanda,

I was recently diagnosed with "subclinal hypothyroidism" My TSH level is at a 5.1 so not too far over"normal" but enough that I'm having symptoms. In response to your questions about TTC, that is actually how I discovered my condition. I went off of bc a year ago and after 8 months had only had 2 periods. At first I thought my body was just figuring itself out after being on bc for so long but after a while I realized it was more. My ob ran the tests and that's when it came out.

I am 28 and I've been on Synthroid for 2 months now and so far no side effects. I am on the lowest dose though (only 25 mcg) so that may be part of it. What dosage did your dr start you out on?

I go back in 2 weeks for a follow up and most likely will get my dosage increased. As of today still no period/ovulation so I'm assuming my levels aren't right yet.

The encouraging news is that from what I've been told even if you experioence the same problems as me TTC the treatment usually just consists of medication to normalize your levels and that should be enough (fingers crossed!!) and you are a big step ahead of me as you've already identified your condition.

Best of luck to you and keep me posted.

Thanks, everyone for your responses! I'm feeling great and I'm really strict about taking my medicine on time. I take it at 6am daily...even setting my alarm on the weekend to get up and take my pill. :-)

Steph, I'm on 50 mcg. So far I haven't had any side effects that I have noticed. My husband and I don't want to TTC for a while but I am sure I'll get off of my BC a few months before we officially start trying. I hope that you receive good news soon!

Thanks again! I hope to be able to visit the board often.

Amanda
