Hypothyroid and no ovulation?

Hi there,

I was recently diagnosed with "sub clinical" hypothyroidism. My TSH is at 5.1 and it was discovered when my ob/gyn ran bloodwork a few months ago to determine why I haven't been having a period (last cycle was first week of March)

Has anyone else had problems with ovulating and having no period? And more importantly has anyone been able to corect this problem by taking medicine? I'm on 25mcg of Synthroid right now (have been on it for about 6 weeks) and I go back next Thursday for a check up. I'm trying to get pregnant and hoping that someone hear can reassure me that this problem can be fixed...

Thanks all!

hi! this is my first time posting to this board, so i hope i am in the right place.
about hypothyroidism and ovulation, i have had some times over the past 5 months where my cycle will disappear for about 6 weeks and just recently i had my cycle for 4 weeks straight. in march of this year i was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. i had 4 large nodules on the right and and my right thyroid was the size of a lime. my doc did a right partial for my first surgery and then diagnosed the cancer the day after the surgery and then 3 days after thaqt i was back in the operating room getting a complete thyroidectomy. about a month after that i had to go into isolation and do the radiation treatment. now, i am on 150mcg of synthroid and still feeling horrible. my lvels are still all over the place, as are my weight, emotions, energy levels, sex drive, and menstrual cycle. i go back to see my doc on aug 4th and don't really know what to expect this time around.
sorry to unload on you , and i know i probably didn't answer your question.

Hi Steph,

I can't address your questions from my own experience but I have read from others here that it is possible to get back on track.

Thanks Calley, I am hopeful that the right dosage of meds will get me back on track but it's so nerve wracking. Time is my best friend and my worst enemy I guess!! I did not go in for my labs before the appt but that's a great idea. At this point it's too late for my appt next week but I will keep that in mind for future appointments!

Hi there, and I'm sorry you had to go all through this to end up with a total anyway and then the RAI and still not feeling good. I honestly feel that if your thyroid isn't right that your cycles probably wouldn't be right anyway, and I didn't realize this all the years that I was never a regular person. Anyway, I have had a total after having a partial for surgery #1 and it was 6 months later that I had the total, also had the RaI and a year later had more RAI. It is almost 10 years now since my TT and I feel great, and I think you need more time to get back on your feet as the meds don't work overnight as some people think they will. It's kind of a day by day process to start feeling better, and for your body to get regulated again, and it's where we learn to be patient and just take it one day at a time. I'm sure your dr. will see just what is happening to you, have your questions ready, and he will probably be sending you for lab workups quite frequently until they reach a certain level and also to be sure that all the ca cells are gone. Don't be frightened as many of us have gone through this--I know, easier said than done, but at least they have gone ahead and started your treatment and didn't ignore the issue at hand. I wish you a good and complete recovery, and hope it doesn't take too long to get back on your feet, but just remember we are all different and what works for one doesn't necessarily work for the other. Like I said, it's a day by day procedure and try not to get impatient--we all learn patience through this. Hugs and prayers, Bea

I had a total thyroidectomy 4 yrs ago this Nov. It does get better, hang in there. I did the RAI first then 18 months later had the surgery. I had no period for awhile then everything fell into place. I now am having problems with my cycle like you described no period then 4wks or more with it. My doctors say all is fine I am 35yrs old I am thinking about having a third child but my period is all messed up I do not know what to think about this all.
