Question about TSH

Hi! I am new here but have had Hypothyroidism for many many years with many many problems, though I come up with new ones from time to time. This is a new one.
Last Fall my Thyroid level was low from stress induced forgetfulness to take my meds for a while. I have been taking .3mg for over a year. However most recent tests have indicated that T4 was normal, more toward the high side of normal, but still normal 1.58, but my TSH was 0.01. What does this mean? I know I have to take less Synthroid, but I have been having all sorts of physical as well as emotional symptoms. Can anyone explain this to me?

Thank you so much,
Donna

Hi Pearlzpet,

Welcome to our board.

Your TSH of .01 is really in the hyperthyroidism range.

Dear Calley7,
Yes I have been having those symptoms, except weight loss, and am not hyperactive, but heart palpitations, heat intolerence etc...

I know they have lowered the Synthroid I am on, but it was only last December that the T4 was low. I have had many episodes with it getting low with attendant symptoms, this is just the first time that it has been hyperthyroid. What I wondered is the role of TSH and how if the T4 is within normal limits, the TSH would make me hyperthyroid?

I have never thought of the TSH having much role but trying to normalize the T3 & T4.

Thanks so much for your reply, it is difficult understanding the details of what does what.

Thank you again.

Hi Donna,

From what I have heard from 2 doctors, both the TSH and T4 seem to be considered when determining whether you are hyper or hypo.
