Hypothyroid Q's
| Sun, 08-13-2006 - 8:44am |
I was just diagnosed with Hypothyroidism which produced mixed emotions. It was nice to know that I wasn't crazy and I really was exhausted with no energy and I really couldn't help gaining weight. I was eating 800-1000 calories a day on a strictly vegan diet and doing an hour of cardio at least 5 days a week. Talk about FRUSTRATING. I pretty much understand my condition except one thing is still a little foggy. With the medication will I lose some of the weight I gained if I don't change my diet (low calorie, vegan) and continue exercise? Or will it still be difficult? I am only 18 years old and my thyroid was low, but not extremely low. Any info/personal experiences would be greatly apprieciated.
Thanks,
Jen

Hi Jen,
Welcome to our board.
I'm not on the hypo side and don't take those meds so I'll let the others here give input from their experiences.
Hi
I'm hypothyroid. What dose of medication are you on.
First of all even though you are having trouble losing weight you shouldn't eat under 1200 calories especially since you are working out so much. Your body can go into a starvation mode and hang on to every ounce of fat no matter how hard your working.
Also from what I've been told and have experienced it may take a while to find the right dosage of medication that works. I still haven't found it yet. The 3 doctors I've been to have all told me that the thyroid pill isn't a magic weight loss pill.
I'm older than you(41)and have other health issues too, so it may be easier and quicker for you to lose. Hope so, nothing more frustrating than to work so hard and not have any results.
Good luck
Dana
