I just got back from my appointment with the endocrinologist - and am overwhelmed. I'm glad DH went with me to be a second set of ears. I actually didn't see the dr, but a CNP...which didn't bother me at all. He seemed sympathetic to the symptoms I had and was sure I didn't have the right dosage of medication. He prefers the brand name stuff, so has switched me over to Synthroid. He also upped my dosage to 75mcg from 50mcg. He said if they had been the ones to first prescribe it, they would have started at a higher dosage initially.
He wanted to run a bunch of bloodwork to rule out Hoshimotos or Hoshimoto's-Graves. I understand what Hoshimoto's is - it's where your body attacks the thyroid gland. Not sure about the Hoshimoto's-Graves though. Anyway, he was also going back to the radiologist that did the thyroid u/s to see if the thyroid gland was homogeneous or heterogeneous (I'm not sure why - maybe one is an indicator of Hoshimoto's?), apparently the report was missing that information. He then went on to talk about the nodules and how if they are over 1cm, they'd do a biopsy to check for cancer (luckily, mine aren't). He assured me that thyroid cancer is very rare (like 5% of hypo patients). He then discusses the RAI treatment and surgery. Not sure why he discussed those treatments, as I know those are more for hyperthyroid problems. Obviously since I want to try for another baby next summer, the RAI treatment isn't an option. My brain is a little foggy with all the information I got...guess I'll know more when I go back on Sept 11. They did take 5 stinkin' vials of blood today - and the needle popped out before she could get to the 6th! Yikes.
He also is putting me on some Wellbutrin to help with the depression. Though it's hard to say if my depression is a result of the thyroid problems (and exaserbated because of it), or a problem in and of itself. He said we could try it for a while as we try to get my thyroid normal again. My OB had recommended that for the libido issue, and if it helps with that and weight loss, AND makes me feel better...then I'm willing to try it. For those who are against it - you have your reasons. I'm not exactly for it, but the diet/exercise hasn't helped me.
So, I go back in a couple of weeks to get the results of the tests. He did ask that DH join me (he was there today with me).
