Appointment with endocrinologist

Had my first appointment with the endocrinologist today. He examined my neck and said he found a small lump on my right side, so we scheduled a sonogram for September 7 - I have no idea if this is at all serious or not, so I'm trying not to freak out.

He did say that he suspects 50 mcg is far too low a dose for me given how overweight I am. He seemed to think 150 mcg might be more appropriate for me, but didn't think I would need to ramp up too gradually. He said that if 50 mcg is ineffective, then I need to be taking something that is effective. He took some more blood and I'll get the results of that next week.

He didn't seem to think my dizziness and vertigo had any relation to my thyroid problems. That was somewhat confusing, actually. Now I'm wondering what's causing that.

It took him three tries to take my blood, though. I've been told in the past that my veins are not easy to find, but I've actually never had any one not be able to get in. When his first try didn't work, he tried again in the same arm and I started to feel like I was going to faint, so he had me lie down and then he tried my right arm while I stayed on the bench. So, next time he gets one try ;)

I went out for a few drinks with a few people after work and found out that a friend of one of my co-workers had hypothyroidism caused by cysts on her thyroid, so she had half of her thyroid removed and never had to go on any medication. I'm not sure if I understand how that worked, but I was surprised again to note yet another person with a thyroid problem. It seems like now that I've been diagnosed, it's popping up everywhere!

Sheryl,

I'm glad you got at least some answers! This disease is so frustrating - it just takes forever to find the right dose b/c of the wait time between testing. I had heard, and the endo confirmed it, that your dosage will probably be around your weight in kilos. Mine said he'd expect me to be on at 100 - 150 mcg before we find the right one. I just see that as MONTHS away! And, we can't get PG until we get this under control...which, we didn't plan to start trying until next summer anyway. I sure hope I'm leveled out before then!

As for the cysts...did he mean nodules? If he did, then don't worry too much about those. I think most everyone has those. If during the u/s they discover the nodules are over 1cm, then they will probably do a needle biopsy of it just to check it out. Don't freak out - cancer is very rare (like 5%). My nodules weren't that big. They'll probably just keep an eye on them.

Hi Sheryl,

It sounds as though you're off to a good start with the new doctor (except for the bloodwork).
