Hi Everyone, I just found this board- good timing, as I just a total thyroidectomy, on Aug 22. Throat is really sore- but getting better, & can't turn neck much in any direction! urgh!
I was wondering if anybody that has had this surgery, was your sternum bone really sore, mine is killing me! Plus the calcium is doing a number on my belly (have IBS).
Will answer any questions anyone has - if you have any. At this point right now I am too tired to type all the things that led up to this surgery.
Any input would be appreciated- good to know that I am not alone !
Thanks, Bunny

BEA- thanks for Dr Garber's name. My dentist has Dr Garber as his Endo Dr., he really likes him also. Sounds like we both have high end Dr's. My Dr is the chief professor in neck surgery at Harvard Medical School, she is very likeable & makes you feel secure about what she is doing.
When I get back on my feet _ I will have to look for that book-- or can order it online !
Starting to feel whoozy again- time to lay back down- don't like this business- it is so unlike me ! I go back to Boston for post-op visit 9/6.
talk later, Bunny
Hi Bunny,
My surgery is at 8:30 tomorrow morning, have to be at hospital at 7:00. Luckily, I am used to being up that early, but it is my son's 2nd day of school, so I have had to make arrangements to get him there.
Thank you for your good thoughts! It has been a difficult day, work-wise, so I am exhausted mentally and physically! Probably a good thing, maybe I will be able to sleep!
I will be in touch!
Julie
Hi Bunny,

Hi Sonia,
Welcome to our board.
I don't live in your area but I see that you have asked Bea already.
Hi Sonia, I want to wish you luck in your up-coming surgery!
I had my total thyroid removed at Mass. General Hospital, Boston (Actually- I believe it Cambridge,MA) the Surgeon was Dr Antonia Stephens- she is wonderful, great compassion, always available for any questions or concerns that you may have.
I read that right now there is a trial with Laser at non or minimum invasive surgery. No needs for wounds. That interesting, ha.
I am hyper since 1987 and only treatment with Acupuncture (KHA) from Korea, and since married on 2001 in the US has to move and nightmare started. I went to doc and med had gotten worse my thyroid, and goiter and more.
One year ago I started developing TED( graves), GERD by June , hypertension and Shoulder (Cuff rotator) inflammation 3 month ago. my TSH is 0.04 and my T3 is 268. I have 120mg of Inderal LA and 450mg of PTU. 80 MG of Nexium and a lot of money with PT for my shoulder. I am sick of going doctors so I want to stop this with surgery. My sister got RAI and she got worse after that. on and on
I am Psychologist and few training in Hand acupuncture, if need few advice for hypo I may help few. Still learning English, sorry for the mess.

I am right now with no bread, no sugar, no iodine, I never smoke, no eat much spice, and now out 100% with and no alcohol. So what else. I want to get ready for my surgery.
My pulse and tachycardia were too wild that normally was on 150 pulse. And lately, this few month ago i felt stairs and all got together in my left arm, triggering my thyroid worse with GERD, frozen shoulder and more.
This is hell. I have been since 08/05 been in doctors with more than 4 appoint per week.
I finally exchange a doctor and DO and went to a group that neurologist, osteopathic, psychiatrist physical therapist all together helped a lot. I also had last Friday shot of Corticosteroids and helped with my inflammation in stomach, joint, pain in arm. I am sleeping once again... I never felt so bad. I went to normal in hours and still with movement restriction but no pain and no more high blood pressure, pulse went down and I am sleeping!!!
please can you share your experience with your thyroidectomy. How do you feel now. What she performed total or partial. What about number are you normal or hypo, what was your diagnosis and prognosis.
Please ask me question I have been with hyper and graves since 1987.
Same think for Calley??
Thank you for your doctors name i will call her tomorrow. Do you know if she uses monitoring nerve. did you lost a lot of blood?, did you gain weight and lose sex drive after or may have improved?
Good night and i will let you know about my appointment.
Sonia
Hi Sonia, Did you get an appointment with Dr Randall Gaz?
Ok I wonder is you were hypo or hyper, I guess hypo because of the Hashimoto, right?
Depending on what you had and on what your test are indicating right now based on results you’ll know next doc appointment, I will be telling you few things that for sure would help. I will tell you that I am expert in thyroid since I have been hyper with lot of family with same bad luck disease and no having treatment in years but having variables that I normally controlled and helped a lot. I got worse when started taking medications, because I was stopping and going that made my thyroid furious. STRESSSSSSSS big time big trigger, the worse and worse. Before and after surgery body stress is big, after even bigger because the anesthesia and the cut, antibiotics and brain enzymes trying to keep equity after big warning and the stated of being change drastically from one side to other after they took your gland. Its big reaction, few level for insignificants make changes, no wonder when they take all your gland and irritated around vocal cord, laryngeal nerves and parathyroid gland, bid storm. How about allergies to meds?? this is claver in the cure and responses to the immune system. same thing allergies to FOOD. let me know about the appointment. I guess I am starting to care about you. Voice I read that takes so long as far as you are speaking right now its better. I also read that newly research indicated that in Graves is better total than partial.
I am concern about how I am going to handle hypo meds as my body is super picky.
You can help to heal faster with nutrition, antiallergenic environments, meditation, autohypnosis for rapid cure, exercises carefully( walking most) and SLEPPING.
I called today Antonia and that phone is just busy crazy, I got another that is from Greg Randolph the chief of the unit and also busy. She is from Harvard!!!!, woao, she must be good and he is the best teacher. I saw her picture too, all its import for me. I like them because they have technology ( nerve monitoring, laparoscopy and I will ask if they are about to use LASER this is the new when no nodules and no cancer. I had test before and no both, lets see how its today. My goiter is big, my right eyes is protuberant and my levels are way to high. Super hyper. My grave appears been developing little bit for years as I saw my progressive pictures and this January when big no to bad but unlikely my eye.
Talk to you soon,
Hugs and hope you just will heal very soon.
Sonia
