Calley- thyroid nodules question

Hi Calley! I figured you'd be a great person to ask this. My friend has 2 nodules on her thyroid- one on each side I believe. The doc did a FNA and said it was benign. However, he still wants to remove her gland. If I am guessing right, she said the nodules are making thyroid hormone and I assume --- making her hyperthyroid although symptomless.
So, why is the doc still pushing for surgery when the test came back as clear (no cancer)? If her nodule is hyperfunctioning, can she just take an anti-thyroid medicine? Or is the ONLY way of treating it surgery?? Typically cold nodules (non-functioning ones) are the ones that are most commonly cancerous. Hers is a hot nodule.
Just wondering what your thoughts are. I told her to get a 2nd opinion and of course her test results. I dont know if she has yet.

Hi April,
I would agree with you about getting a second opinion.
Calley,
You can take meds too but in my case (not sure why) the doctor didn't ever think they would work.
