Hello,

I've recently had thyroid surgery and was wondering if anyone has any recommendations on topical agents that minimizes the appearance of the scars?

I am a little remiss about what to use topically, as when I had surgery my endo told me to just let it heal naturally as it was cut in the crease of my neck, also to make sure that when I showered that I gently washed the scar (when it could get wet) and just pat it and don't let a crust of any sort build up on it. If you gently pat it every day with a wet cloth to clean it, you won't have any trouble with it, but as far as making it a minimal scar, I was just told to wait and time would heal. It does heal but it also shows, but you will be surprised at how many people a year from now won't even notice that scar. We've all earned that scar, so be proud of it, and wear it with honor and pride. You've been through something that many people don't and won't ever understand.

I'm sorry I can't give you a more direct answer on what to use, I know other girls have been told to try different things, but I went strictly by what my endo told me. Hugs, Bea

Hi Bea,

I really appreciate your response. Glad to hear that it'll minimize on it's own over time.

Thanks again,

I am wondering the same thing. I had someone tell me that a coworker of theirs used cocobutter. I never met that coworker though so I can't attest to how it looked. A couple other people said they bought vitamin E capsules, opened them up and used the oil from inside of it, rubbing it on the scar. The two that did that i know personally and their scars are minimal. So as soon as mine closes up, I will probably try that.

I have surgery scheduled on 9/29. I will be getting the left lobe of my thyroid removed. My surgeon's nurse recommended getting the Neosporin scar patches. She said to wear them 12 hours a day for, I think, 12 weeks. She said they were not cheap, but I could cut them into strips because the scar will be so thin. I haven't looked into them yet but I may give them a try. Although, 12 hours a day for 12 weeks may be a little more than I can do.

Good luck!

personally, you will be wasting your money on those things Colombiamom -- use Lotion with Vitamin E. - the scar may never totally be Gone, but it does fade enough with time. - i had half my thyroid, and a giant benign tumor, removed in july 97,-- i have a faint scar now,- no one who just meets me can even see it. - dolores

Thank you so much for your response. You are already the second person to recommend it. I have to go out and try it!

I didn't use anything in particular for my scar except an herbal salve that I got (Ringeblumen Salbe) in Austria (where I lived at the time) BUT.....my scar is barely noticable - it healed very well. I used sunscreen on it religiously for the first year - my surgeon's instructions.
Now I wear necklaces, chokers etc - I thought I'd have a noticable scar and was worried, but it is fine!
Just don't forget the sunscreen!
