When to change dosage....
| Thu, 10-05-2006 - 9:13am |
Good morning,
I have been taking a very low dose of Synthroid for 4 weeks now. My TSH levels were not extremely high, but I was persistant with my DR. for many years with consistant problems. Anyway, she put me on just 25mg. In the 4 weeks I have not noticed a single change. When I had my hysterectomy I was told that I could "play" with the levels of estrogen to see what was best meeting my needs. I've gone all over the board with my estrogen levels and have finally settled on what works for me. Im wondering if its safe to do the same with the Synthroid. For anyone who might not know, I am a military spouse, and although medical care is "free", it's not always consistant and not always good care. So, Im thinking now that I've finally gotten the Synthroid I can adjust it myself. Any suggestions? TIA- Stephanie

Hi Stephanie,
Since I'm not on synthroid, I'll leave your question for those that have experience with it.
I do know it takes some time to make a difference but how much...not sure.
Hi mykidz,
I think it's true that thyroid dosages usually need to be tuned to the individuals body. Its not a cookie cutter process. You can mess with your dosage somewhat. The problems lies in the prescription refill! If you start using extra pills, you will run out sooner. If you miss a few doses that could set you back some. 1 thing about taking thyroid meds is that you need to be consistent in taking your pills. Take them around the same time each day and without calcium of any sorts since that can block the absorption.
.25 s a very low dose of synthroid. At about 4 weeks out you should start to notice something. I'd call your doc and ask for an increase to see how that works. OR at least get your blood levels checked (tsh, t3, t4)- go from there. A TSH around 1 is desirable and t3,t4 in top third of range seems to make a lot of people feel best.
Good luck!
