Hi. I'm 28 yrs old and I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism on Oct. 17th and started synthroid that day. I have had symptoms for quite some time but I was diagnosed with depression (I probably do have that too) and I just ignored all the other annoying things about my body (being cold, no metabolism, feet turn gray and numb, shedding hair constantly...) I actually went to the doctor b/c I had gained weight and my vision was weird and we thought it was due to my antidepressant. I guess not.

Anyway, now I have gone from being freezing cold all the time to having hot flashes and night sweats...its like being in menapause! I have also had severe mood swings which my husband just wont be able to handle for much longer. I also have a soar throat which I have had for several months and I just assumed it was allergies since I am allergic to Alabama where I happen to live right now.

Any thoughts on why such a dramatic change in temp intollerance over 13 days?

Any comments would be appreciated. I just don't know what to worry about, what not to worry about and I don't want to go to the doctor with a laundry list and be viewed as a hypocondriac.

One more question. Should I be seeing a specialist. I go to a military clinic, so if I need one, I might have to ask or insist on one.

Thank you and Happy Halloween!

You could have too much thyroid hormone now - has your heart rate increased, do you have foot cramps. Look at hyper conditions of the thyroid- you should be going back to the doctor after a certain amount of time for them to do another blood check- too make sure your now balanced- this appointment might seem like a long time away if it was like mine- 12weeks- I had to call and let them know my new issues-they then gave me advice and new meds- the squeek wheel get the attention some times - don't think your bothering them - you have cares.

Hi Mom_afwife,

Welcome to our board.

I would agree with tlandon that your synthroid dose may need adjusting.

I just read your posting and had to laugh! I too live in Albama and an highly allergic to it!!!!! I have thought for a long time that I had a thyroid problem but many blood tests said otherwise. I have been having extremely severe itching for a year and a half now, with little to no relief and no answers. Have the sleep apnea, losing hair, cold feet, weight gain, etc. I too am a military dependent (currently at Maxwell AFB), and have seen 2 dermatologists and 3 flight doctors trying to find out what's going on. The last dermatololist gave me yet another prescription antihistamine and a steroid lotion that provided some relief for about a month, but alas, all itching has returned. It affects every aspect of my life from not having restful sleep because of itching to not being able to have sex because I'm itching!! We arrived in Alabama in July and the itching magnified 10 times over upon arrival.

Anyway, I saw an herbalist about a month ago (desperate at this point). She said she thought my thyroid was out of wack and suggested I do the basal temp thing and also did an iodine patch test on my skin. Most people don't put stock in the skin test, but mine was gone very quickly. She suggested that I go on a kelp supplement and I did for a few days, but further research kind of scared me a little, so I came off of it. Hadn't noticed any difference anyway. My average basal temp is running 93.6 right now, so I've been researching that as well. I go back to the doc on Friday. I actually like the doc I have now and he's willing to listen and seems proactive. I just hope I can convince him that I need a trial of meds just to see without having to be referred to yet another doctor and start the whole process over again. My skin and my sanity can't take much more!!

If you're still around, maybe we could meet for lunch...

That is your bodies way of changing to the new level that is building up in your body. I was so cold in the beginning when my thyroid level was low. I still at times have temperature fluctuations, my husband says I am pre-menapause to give me a hard time. You could see a speacialist called an endocrinologist but your regular doctor can monitor your blood work and medication dosage. Unless you feel that your regular doctor doesnt have the answers you are looking for, then the endocrinologist would be where you would want to go. I was diagnoised with hypothyroidism for 6 or more years now and my son who is 15 was diagnosed at birth with it. Now that I think about it, it has actually been 12 years that I was diagnosed. Time sure flies...:) I was diagnosed with depression at first. At one time I was told I was bi-polar. I have learned that this little pill that I take everyday at the same time is a magic little pill. It makes a huge difference in my life. I don't take depression medication anymore. If I can be of any help, please let me know.
