Pregnancy and hypothyrodism

Hi,
I am 6 months pregnant and was just diagnosed with a hypothyroid (T4 of .9, not sure of TSH but the nurse said it was "in the normal range"; nurse was not forthcoming with the information). I was diagnosed after getting a rash on my belly and then exhibiting other weird symptoms (itchy fingers, dry lips, eye edema). The eye edema prompted a check of liver and thyroid and here I am. My pregnancy weight gain has been normal so far (under 20 pounds so far) and I haven't felt *extremely* tired.
I have been put on medication to increase the thyroid. They plan to re-check me in a month.
Does anyone know whether thyroid issues tend to develop in pregnancy? I did have my levels checked a year ago and they looked okay (maybe they just checked TSH?). Is this likely to be permanent or just last through the pregnancy?
I am definitely concerned that this wasn't picked up earlier in the pregnancy and am trying to figure out whether it is pregnancy-induced or something that I should start thinking about managing over the longer term. There ARE some thyroid issues in my family (aunt with thyroid cancer, cousin who is hypothyroid, sister who took medication for hyperthyroid that resolved itself after 2 years).
Any info on pregnancy and thryroid issues would be helpful. I've only found that I SHOULD be taking the meds to manage my levels on my searches on the internet.
Thanks!

Hi Koriz,
Welcome to our board.
Pregnancy can trigger thyroid problems and sometimes they do go away and other times they stick with you.
