New Thyroid problem/new to board!

Hello my name is Alyson. I am 23. Dh is Juan, Dd Isabella Violet. We live in Sunny Florida.

My daughter is 15 months old and I have had numerous health problems since she was born. Including a recently diagnosed Thyroid. I have an under active Thyroid or Hypothyroidism. I don't know anything about this really and usually what the doctor tells me kinda gets confusing and goes over my head. I do better reading up on things on my own. I was hoping that somebody could point me in the direction of some good informational websites or give me some personal advice or personal experience information that they may have. Anything would be much appreciated. I am doing some of my own research on here but not turning up too much except for things about symptoms that I already knew about.

I am very relived but nervous about this whole diagnose's. I don't know exactly what this means or where I go from here. At the same time its just nice to know there is help for what I have been feeling. Having a new baby is hard enough, then adding on all this health problems makes it even more stressful. Anybody else out there get diagnosed with a Thyroid after having a baby?

I look forward to hearing from you all . . . and getting to know you around the board. Please feel free to ask me anything you would like. :-) Talk to you soon.

Hi Alyson,

Welcome to our board.

There is a lot of information online about thyroid problems and we do have a website that has book resources that you might find helpful:

Thank you for your response and reassuring words!! :-)

We have definitely been down the checking to see if I am pregnant road. I have taken so many HPT and had numerous blood tests at the docs office. I am definitely NOT pregnant!!!!! They did start me on a low does of Levoxyl. And mentioned the possibility of an autoimmune disease to me. I am not sure exactly what that means but I know it makes it more difficult to TTC. (that is hard news for us right now since we plan on TTC in April or May 07) I have been doing my research but it is all really overwhelming. I appreciate you pointing me in the right direction with those websites. I will be going back to the doctor on Wends.

Hi Alyson,

I totally hear you -- being diagnosed with a thyroid condition is very overwhelming. But there is a lot of great information out there as Calley posted. Mary Shomon on about.com is great - she also has a book about recognzing and managing thyroid conditions.

http://thyroid.about.com/About_Thyroid_Disease.htm

After having my son I was diagnosed with a thryoid nodule (lump on my thyroid) which launched a journey to find a good doctor. I went to several doctors who told me i didnt have a thyroid problem, in spite of all the symptons and evidence. My body temperature was 95.9 -- not exaclty healthy -- and a strong indicator something was wrong. Finally I found a doctor who really listened to me and looked at the symptons, not just the labs. He prescribed Armour thyroid replacement (not the synthetic which is more common but I have read can have effects with some people)

In the 4 months since taking the medicine I feel better than i have felt in years. The other doctors wouldnt give me medicine because on paper my labs said I was fine -- clearly I wasnt fine. Aside from weight loss, all of the other symptons have improved -- more energy, dont feel foggy all the time, skin isnt dry, hands and feet arent cold and many more.

So the only advice I have is educate yourself as best you can (when you are ready and not too overhwelmed). Keep searching until you find a doctor that will help you. And also note, the synthetic meds are not great for everyone -- people respond differently. So if medicine isnt working, tell your doctor and try another brand.

Good luck and dont worry -- you can feel better!

my son is 16 months old and I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and type 2 diabetes after he was born. I can understand alot of what the doctors are telling me because I am a medical assistant and medical transcription student. they are still trying to get my meds under control, they just upped my levothyroxin to 112 mcg because my tsh was at 6. my diabetes is being controlled by diet right now until they get the thyroid under control. good luck with your thyroid.

Liza,

Thank you so much for your post. Your words mean a lot right now. Things have not be easy for me lately. I am so exhausted and just tiered of feeling this way all the time. I love the way you described it . . It's definitely like being in a fog.

I am glad you were vigilant about your health and your sons. Sadly sometimes you just have to keep on the Docs. I don't know why. Right now I am having problem with my meds. Ever since I have been on them I cannot remember ANYTHING and I have been feeling like I am in a bigger fog. I go back to the doctor tomorrow. Hopefully they will work this all out. Thanks for giving me hope. I'm glad your doing better. :-)

Thank you Cally. All of this gets so confusing, then throw in the memory loss, foggy feeling and sleepiness. (Did I mention I am having really bad Insomnia lately! sigh) Sometimes It is all just too confusing. I am glad I have Dh to stand by me, he has been so wonderful and supportive. In fact he went to the store next door to our condo just now to get me chocolate! *hehe* Anyways . . . I am going to go over that again with the doc tomorrow. Thanks.

Hi Angela. Thanks for you input and kind words on my situation. Its been great to have the support and knowledge from this board. :-) I hope they get your meds under control soon. I think I am dealing with that right now. When your meds are off did you personally have increased side effects. Like I was explaining above, feeling like you are in more of a fog or the thyroid problem is getting worst?

its hard to say because i also have type 2 diabetes but as my numbers get higher the more tired i feel. i feel great the first week or so on an increased dose and then i start feeling worse again a week before my blood work and then they up the dose again. i cant really go on any diabetes meds right now until the thyroid is under control because that contributes to my high blood sugars. it takes a while but eventually my meds will be correct and hopefully i will feel better.

Your story is mine as well. I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism when my daughter was 8 months old. I was having horrible symptoms including, foggy brain, muscle pain in arms and shoulders, my back was in so much pain I could barely walk, weight gain, I slept constantly and never felt rested, and finally my face blew up and I looked horrible.
