Hi,
I just got back from the Endo and he had such an accent I could barely understand him. I have hyperthyroidism TSH .02 due to two nodules...one being 3 cm. My question is this.....the doctor recommended a ultrasound guided biopsy which terrifies me. I already had an uptake scan and now he wants the biopsy in order to find out which way to proceed. Depending on the biopsy I guess means...if it is not cancer. I was told I could do RAI or take medication to normalize my levels. Of course, I would rather just take meds at first to see if it helps.
The doctor also mentioned Graves disease as a possibility...how is this diagnosed? He mentioned something about finding out if the thyroid is leaking or is it is overactive due to the nodules. He ordered more in depth bloodwork as well to find what he is looking for. Any thoughts??? Thanks

I just wanted to let you know that a fine needle biopsy is not a big deal. I had it done about one month ago and I, too, was worried about it. It only took about 30 minutes from the time I got into the room to the finish. I went to work right after it was done. It was sore for a couple of days in the area where the needles were inserted, but that went away quickly.
My thyroid functions fine and the levels are normal, but I have one larger nodule, about 3cm on my right side and a couple of smaller ones on my left side. My biopsy test came back benign, but there were some suspicious cells that were a concern. I then was referred to a surgeon who was very helpful in explaining everything.
Just wanted to let you know the biopsy was not anything to worry about. Good luck with everything.
Hi Kristinehm,
When you mentioned an ultrasound-guided biopsy, it brought to mind a recent post on this board.
Hi,
Thanks for your thoughts, it puts my mind at ease...a little! I don't know why I am having an ultrasound guided biopsy??? The ENT felt the nodule when he examined me. The only thing that I can think of is that my uptake scan came back "normal" which meant that the nodules did not take up the iodine. I have read that nodules that are cold don't take up iodine....I think??? I did ask the ENT what did that mean....and he evaded the question. I also have to got to the hospital to have it done and am not sure who is performing it. I'll keep you posted....thanks!
