I'm Kymm, a 24 year old teacher from Georgia. I'm usually on the "Waiting to Try" board. Unfortunately, I was recently diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, so a message board member (thanks nursejenny!) referred me here. I'm so glad to know you guys are here! I've never really heard of hyperthyroidism, so I'm totally clueless. I was diagnosed by my regular doctor, and he referred me to a endocrinologist. The endocrinologist won't be able to see me until January 20th! What a while to wait!
I knew something was wrong with me when I couldn't concentrate on one thing, and I seemed very anxious. I also started to lose weight, and I didn't quite understand why. In addition -- the thing that really made me go see a doctor -- my HAIR! It was falling out! So I went to see him and he was so quick to blame it on stress. It was my idea to be tested for thyroid problems. It runs in my family, so I thought it wouldn't hurt. Unfortunately I was onto something. It's just amazing that the doctor automatically blamed it on stress. I would've been sick and would not have known it. :-(
Anyway, what bothers me so much about this situation is that my husband and I plan to start trying for our first child soon. I've always been in perfect health, so it was quite a surprise when I was diagnosed so close to this big step in my life. I am aware that hyperthyroidism can affect a woman's fertility (just as easy as it could not). For those of you that have experience with HYPERTHYROIDISM -- be it through yourself or a close family member -- please ease my fears. I think I remember the doctor saying that I do not have Grave's disease, if that makes a difference.
I am just so afraid that I won't be able to have a healthy pregnancy when the time comes. Please tell me that this hyperthyroidism is only a problem when it's not being treated. Please tell me that I can have a child just as easy as the next woman. My husband and I plan to start trying around summer time.
Sorry if I loaded you with too much information. I'm just so scared and confused.

Hi Kymm,
Welcome to our board.
It sounds as though you do have quite a bit of knowledge regarding your thyroid problem.
