Rachel,

I think Dyan answered most of these questions in your post under the Thyroid Cancer folder.

I do have one question - are they only removing the lump or the whole lobe that has the lump in it?

Rachel,

If you have cancer cells in the nodule, you have cancer. I was stage 1, the cancer was only contained in the nodule. Like I said before, make sure you get a second path opinion on your thyroid. I was back to work in a week. It was a piece of cake. I am 5'5 and weigh 115 now, I gained 15 pounds and was 130 pounds a few months after surgery and since being back on my meds and at the correct dose, I am back down to 115 and training for a marathon. I forgot if you need RAI or not??

The surgeon said RAI is up in the air right now, will know after the first surgery. I tried to ask him about the different things I've read on here and in said in the attempt to not cause panic in me that we would wait to answer those questions until he was 100% sure.

I have contemplating goign to Walter Reed or Bethesda Hospital's in Maryland, they are some of hte best in th4e country.

I insisted my dr telling me all possible scenarios so that I could mentally prepare myself for anything. Ask your dr if he is going to send your lobe to a second lab for another opinion, remember my hosp path missed my cancer cells but the 2nd path found it. Thank god, I must have had alittle angel looking over me. You will be fine about the weight, you will gain alittle but most don't gain to much. You still have to watch what you eat but with the right meds, your metabolism will be normal.

Keep me posted....
