thyroid and bone pain

I've been taking thyroid medicine for years now and I've noticed for some time that whenever we adjust my medicine (thyroxen) that it effects my bones...The last time the Dr adjusted me to 88mcg every day except Sunday...well by the third Sunday I could hardly walk...The pain in my hips and legs was like a severe toothache...I immediately took another 88mcg and an advil and went to bed....by next morning I felt a whole lot better, but by afternoon next day, once again the pain started...I again took 1/2 tablet more and then I got to feeling a whole lot better. I still have loss of bending ability in my thumb...sometimes it comes completely out of joint and I have to shake my hand fast and hard to pop it back into place. The thing is when I adjust my thyroid medicine I get immediate results. My Dr tells me I need to see a bone dr but I believe it is all directly related to this medicine..I'm here to have you all validate this as she thinks I'm nuts and I think she's closed minded.(smile) Anxiously awaiting your feedback.

Hi gloriousmerci,
Welcome to our board.
I'm not sure how the bone pain fits in with the meds and thyroid disorder but I know you can have muscle aches and weakness.
When you take the meds, are you taking more than the doctor has prescribed?
Maybe I could ask you a question first. Do you still have your thyroid? Or are you taking thymed's because you might have been hypo?
I have been on thymed's for over 10 years due to a TT and have not had bone pain. I think your dr. may be better than you think if she is the one suggesting that you see a bone dr. Most dr.s don't like to forward their patients on, and I'm not sure if your taking your med's sporadically or every day like you should. If you take too much thymeds, it can have a tendency to damage or overwork other organs in your body. If you haven't heard it before, let it be known that thymeds can have a tendency to make your bones brittle. If nothing else, a bone density would be a good place to start.
Good luck, Bea
bea,
Thanks for your input. I have been taking thyroid medicine for about 20 years. I have had my thyroid removed about 3 years ago. Untill about 3 years ago I was just going to a general Dr, not endocrinlogist. He would increase my thyroid constantly and one summer I felt like what arthritic people feel like...my feet were turning in, my hands looked crippled and were pulling in as well. ABout this same time the drs decided that my thyroid needed testing so they took me off medicine. I felt so much better. I begged not to have to go back on but that was not to be. They did then remove the thyroid. The dr I currently have, which i like just fine, started me at 88mcg which was lower than the dose(125) i normally was taking which was fine with me cause I didn't want to go back on it anyway. Now as we adjust the medicine is when I notice the pain coming and going. This last time when I was 88 every day but Sunday, like I said the pain was so severe it actually had me crippled. taking thyroid helped. So I'm still looking for anyone else I can relate too with this same reaction. I've been told I'm differnt (smile). My sister takes thyroid also. She does well on 1mcg, puts her hyper. I do good on 50mcg, makes me feel hyper, don't need a nap like usual, but the dr says I'm hypo. I think I'm wired backwards. Thanks again for your input.
Still researching,
